I tried to solder but couldnt hold my hand steady enough. Decided to try buying the board before I screwed up the original board. Cost has now gone up to $240. I replaced tonight and everything is working. Will post an update if anything changes.

Great post. I used these excellent instructions to pull the NAV unit and remove the circuit board. I took the circuit board to a friend who designs/build circuit boards for a living, and he inspected the board, under a microscope-- looking at the PIN 60 area in particular, and said it all looked perfect.

I have no AC or Heat, it does not show the outside temperature, and I get the error msg "check the connection of air conditioner" I am so upset with my purchase of what I thought was a great vehichle. It is in mint condition (2004 Land Cruiser with under 90k miles)-- but now I have no heat or AC. No way I am going to buy a new NAV unit for $4k. I guess I will send it out for repair and hope they can fix it. Would appreciate any ideas.

I am really having buyer's remorse. Never had any of my Hondas give me this much trouble.

Is this still working for you? Was the part number exactly the same as what you took out? My circiut board has the number 86114-60030 on it, which is not the same as the one mentioned above (60020)-- not sure if this board will work or not.
 
My MFD, in my 2004 LC is part number 86111-60181, and has a circuit board numbered 86114-60030. My manufacture date is 7/04. The Technical Service Bulletin on this issue is dated 1/10/2005 and mentions MFD part number 86111-60180, and from pictures above the circuit board number is 86114-60020. Does it stand to reason, that my MFD and circuit board-- may not be the one with the PIN 60 issues???? I have two of the symptoms, but I am hoping it is not my MFD, as I can't find the replacement circuit board to purchase, and I am not spending $5k on a new MFD. Thanks.
 
I have probably the same or a similar problem.

My (HDJ100L 2.4TD 2004) MFD shows sometimes stripes or greys out, sometimes I have a blackscreen without having access to the vents and A/C even from the bezel keys.

Actual it´s inconstant, but I am afraid from a complete fail of the unit.

I don´t need NAV or radio, but the defrost vent coupled to this unit is essential to pass our annual inspection .
A fail forces to a repair within two month, or the registration will be detracted (new EU regulation in AT).

I guess it is a PIN60 (or loose soldering point at another pin) problem, building model aircrafts (RC Jets, Helicopter et.c.) soldering is not the challange.
When the blackscreen events cumulates I will check it as described here.

If this does not work, exists a alternate workaround to get the A/C and vents operated?
Has someone successfully got and tried a alibaba replacement?

The last chance is installing an old scool switch direct to the vent lines bypassing the original cables......with an inoperative A/C.
GPS and other app´s are not really needed.

In Austria the HDJ100 is very seldom, to find someone knowing about the MFD unit is difficult, even at Toyota service workshops.
The staff there is trained in repairing newer cars, to order a 5000EUR replacement would be possible, but it´s insane.

Android radios (as PUMPKIN) are not compatible, for programming an interface to the car com sytem I have not enough IT experiance.
 
Yes, I have some sheets, but I have to recheck if it is exactly for my HDJ100l 2004 Europe.

It´s very complex (many com pins at the connectors, difficult mesuring procedures between the pins for diagnosis et.c.).
There is the need of a specialist for car electronics to work with the wireing sheets.
(My Defender/2006 Td5 is in comparison stone age- easy (exept engine control unit with attached sensors)!)

Your post is great! I made a hardcopy and started to work.
Step by step it needs only 20 min to remove (and repose) the headunit, without breaking plastic brackets or cracks in the dashboard.
Otherwise it would take much more time to workout the disassambly procedure, so it´s easy.

Also the disassembly of the CAN BUS and screen from the frame is easy.

I resoldered the pin60, it´s real difficult to get a sufficient view to the micro solding points. I have an used single use med endoskope for enlarging. But nevertheless it is difficult to distinguish, if the joint is well soldered or if there is still a capillar-fissure below.
If there is an out of the factory problem with an isolatiation due to final covering, it will not be shure that the solder covers all .

After the first touch with the soldering iron (same 15w small tip as yours) I was not shure about. After 3x 0,5sec I rechecked it , it seems to be done.

I reassembled the unit, after rebooting the screen showed only a faded black white indication ,trip info without data.
Moving the topmost left multiconnector caused a normal operation.

It might be a PIN60 problem, which I repaired insufficient, or, another connection problem (crack or changing resistance) in the line from the connector itself to a loose pin anywhere . I had sprayed a small amount of anti oxydation contact agent to the female connectors.

At the moment the unit works, I will see it if it stays reliable.

If it fails again, I know the way to get again access to the internal parts in a short time.
In this case I will resolder each pin, or I give it to a electronic experienced friend to gauge the contacts and fix them.

If it is really new or not, I am not shure..., that´s not important, but it had solved my MFD problem!

Delivery from China to EU within 7 days, relatively low costs, MFD booted imediatly and works as new!

Thank you so much for posting this guide. Couldn’t have done it without you. In my case two attempts at heating the joint failed to re-solder the joint. The joint just did not seem to have enough solder to reflow. Went from an intermittent fault to permanent so heating must have served to spring the joint apart.

Clearly needed more solder, the question was how to apply it. My solution was to cut a minute piece of solder off thin 60/40 solder wire, the first attempt was a piece about the size of a full stop on this page, way too big. The second a piece about half the size. This was picked up using the tip of a dampened wooden cocktail stick and placed at the angle between the pin and connector, then touched for half a second with the iron. Result, a perfect, shiny clean joint with a good covering of solder.

Reinstalled in vehicle and all works perfectly.

Hope this tip helps someone.

Without your guide I would have had no hope at all.

Jan 4 2020... Wow! THIS REALLY WORKED!! What a great series of instructions! First problem I've had with my MPD on 2004 LC...(total blank) decided to look at Pin 60... (I'm versed in basic repair) I could not see an "open" or a problem however, what did I have to lose...I used a fine tip on the solder gun and just a very fine amount of solder on the tip under a sewing magnifier (A MUST) and light (from Grandma's sewing desk..). After reinstalling... Magic.. It's still working several hours later... If it dies.. I'll just get a replacement board as discussed above. THIS REALLY WORKED! and Thanks for the detailed instruction guide.. It really made the process easy and enjoyable....[and a $ saver!] Jake

I have an issue with the clock PCB/Print in the Multidisplay. There is an Transistor burned and i can´t se the items number on it.
Anyone have a picture of the part?
It is placed behind the black connector(BUS) where the 3 new welding is.

My fix worked for a few weeks.. Think I'll try the complete replacement of the board...Did you replace it with Toyota MPD part 86114-60020 / 134160-6830 at the AliExpress site? Was the second set of numbers relevant? Lexas vs LC?
 
Just a short note to say a sincere 'Thank you" to the DomSmith and Hobbit and others for this extraordinary set of instructions and background. Just done mine on a 2004 J100 Amazon and all seems to be working fine, at least at the moment. Thank you guys!!
 
So I just did this. My daughter came downstairs as I was finishing up and I told her there was no way it was gonna work. Sure enough, got it all put back together fired up the truck and its working. I sure hope it lasts.
