I've got a distributor that went bad. A bolt/part came loose and it wouldn't work anymore. Replaced it with a new distributor and now I'm trying to find out just went wrong with the old one. There's no part number on it. It's at least 20 years old, vac advance. The shaft rotates but stops before a full rotation in either direction. Removing the points plate frees it up, but as soon as either of the bolts (the cap clip attachment bolts) holding the plate on it on it sticks. I would like to get it completely apart to see just where the problem is but...

To get the shaft out do I knock out the pin down at the gear or is there something else??

Does the shaft wobble. It sounds like there's and issue with the points plate or the screws that hold the plate in place. Something is probably binding with something else under or around the plate when its snugged up.

Under the rotor, the shaft is hollow, and there is a crosspoint screw in the bottom of the hole that holds the upper part of the shaft to the lower.

It sounds to me like your screw may be loose, and the prop that engages the counterweights is bumping into the underside of your points plate.

it's not loose...can't get it to turn

Maybe it will slide out if you pound out the pin and remove the drive gear.
