well I just got to messing around with the dist in my 84 20/22R truck. I noticed a noise. It's got two little hammer like things and they have NO pressure against them. As I rotate it it sounds like a ratchet or safety catch on an old hand winch

I grabbed another dist I have that has one vac port on it and it sorta sounded like it. I found another with the two ports I need and it has no sound?

The two hammers look like they keep the points or what ever spreads in the advance, from turning. So I'm thinking at idle it locks the things that spread and keep them from opening. Only, as I'm thinking more about it, with no pressure one would open from 6:00 and close at 12:00 as it went around in rotation and the other visa versa

:confused::confused:

Do I need to throw that other dist in there?

I kinda H8 to if it's good...

Your explanation was a wee bit vague for me, but it sure sounds like you are missing the springs on the mechanical advance weights?????

yeah, I believe that's it...

they just fall over and make a tick sound if I rotate it in my hand....

I can see springs, but there doesn't appear to be a place on the weights for them. IOWs a spring is connected to what would be the pins that hold the arms I'm talking about.

I found this out b/c I have the dist out, and rotating it by hand. It's not installed in the head.

I had another dist and it semi did what the one in question is doing. Only nowhere near as bad. I can rotate it and see the arms moving in it but they don't move as much as the one in question and seem to have a softer landing and don't make a click sound.

Guys I'm sorry about not knowing the proper name for the components. If anyone can post a detailed illustration of he components, I'll tell you what I see.

dont you have a vacuum advance distributor you can use, instead?

yep, I threw it in there after a 2 day T.Cover pull and it seemed to run better...

in the two miles I got to drive it...

Now I've got to pull the motor again, so :bang: one day....

I think this is the one.

ok, THX ToyotaDon.

in the old distributor, the weights would move freely and rattle as I turned the dist by hand.

The springs are attached but seem to have no effect on the weights.
