Does anyone know if/when Disc Brakes became standard of FJ40's?

Does swapping out the drum brakes for disk brakes effect the value of a cruiser at all (positively or negatively) assuming it is original?

Most people talk about pulling the front from the '76 for the brakes, so maybe that year. No rear dics that I know of.

it would depend on location as to when it became standard... i think it was 84' model that ALL locations came with disc... i would need to double check that...

if you live in a Gen area.... you may have better luck finding brakes from a mini truck... aka toyota pickup

I would also think a true restore would be everything as it came with no mods. Everyone has opinions about the quality of stopping a heavy 40. Safety is important, but shoes can work good if maintained.

Hi all,

Ravenmobile, for US market Land Cruisers front disc brakes became standard in 1976. Unless you are doing an absolute museum quality restoration on a pre-1976 Land Cruiser most folks think of disc brakes as a very desirable upgrade.

Alan

Done right disc brakes are worth more, and indistinguishable from stock to most people. If you plan to drive it... Or ever cross water, convert to discs and don't look back.

For reference: my front drums lasted 20,000 miles (2 years) and the drums were toast. The first set of front disc brakes were still working when I chose to redo them at 95,000 miles (19 years).

I now have 4 wheel discs, and would never go back.

Agree completely, as long as you are talking a TOYOTA front disk swap and not a bolt-on after market thing.
