I have been told that all Canon lenses (even the L glass) is made by Tahmron. Canon doesn't make their own glass anymore. Nikon is the only on that makes it's glass in-house. Don't know if that's true

I have used the Canon 2.8 EF-L USM for several sporting events and I LOVE that lens. It is flat out gorgeous. I HATE the white body but oh well.

I haven't tried Nikon's heavy hitter lenses yet but I do like the bodies much better in the "prosumer" market

You'd be fine with the Rebel, it's a great camera. As someone mentioned, it shares many of the parts and features with the 20D. I appreciate your desire to support a local business, but check out prices online. Last time I bought an SLR I got it through a major photo supply house MUCH cheaper than anywhere local. Gave me enough extra $$ to get another lens.

Update, I ended up with the Rebel XT. I bought it at Costco. I also took that memory sheet in and Costco had one of the faster memory cards. I think it was $972 after tax for the card, camera, and the 17-?? Canon Lens. This is one of the better Canon lenses with image stabilization. It is definitely fast enough for our needs. We haven't taken any outstanding photos with it yet. But we haven't had any outstanding things to take photos of yet. Oh, it needs a sunshade! I did get spots when I was in a canyon shooting into the sun.

Eric,

Amazon.com is a great source for accessories for your camera.

Sony R1!

I've just bought a Sony R1 from their showroom yesterday, and so far it seems like an amazing camera.. not really SLR, but very comparable @ just under $1000 with a lens and 10.3 mega pixels..

Our R1 just arrived via FedEx yesterday and we love it! I didn't want the hassle (to me) of dealing with lenses yet I wanted an excellent lens. One of the reviews peg the lens on the R1 being worth the price of the camera.

I shopped around and read a million reviews of web sellers and finally purchased from IBuyDigital.com delivered for $888.00.

I included this shot from our old Canon G1 just for the hell of it.

I'll second that. We bought all of our accessories, Memory Stick, case, battery and charger, for less than most other places and they had everything.

Hey Guys, my wife is a professional photographer. She uses all NIKON equipment only NIKON, I used to be a Canon guy but I find that you cant beat either one. Plus they do make their own lenses. That is a big deal...whats the point in buying a SLR body and then buying a cheap lense , so dont buy cheap lenses that is what makes your picture. We have four D100 two D70 and two D70S. Just my past experience that you cant go wrong with NIKON. All of our cameres are lense specific. Meaning that we never change lenses unless we have to.

It is a good idea to stay with the brand of camera that you have the $$ spent for lenses but not all older lenses will work well with the newer cameras. With that you can sell what you have to help pay for some new glass to work with the camera that you decide on. I have the canon 20D and it is a great camera but Nikon just came out with the D200 and I would probably get that one instead and I may still if Canon does not match it soon. What has sold me on that camera (you wont go wrong with either brand) is that the D200 is built with O-rings & other seals to make this camera better suited for the out doors by keeping out the dust & moister that will get into the other cameras. This is some thing that I need for the type of shooting that I do and it would not hurt out on the trail getting those back country shots either and at around the same price range why not.

I got the Canon Rebel XT a few months ago and *love* it. Everytime I pull it out I'm glad I didn't go with some other point/shoot camera. I paid $829 for the XT black kit (silver is usually cheaper) with 18-55 Canon lens from buydig.com (very reputable place, I've bought literately dozens of things from them). Just recently got the Tamrom 28-300mm 3.5-6.3 lens. I don't doubt it might not be the absolute sharpest/fastest lens ever, but it's pretty darn sharp and with a effective range of 45mm-480mm (1.6:1 crop factor) it's awesome as a all-in-one lens. Lens was about $400, but I absolutely love it!

Note: IMO lens sharpness for a dSLR is sooo over-rated. The second you get your picture onto a computer you can do so much with sharpening, color levels, saturation, etc...it ofcourse is still important to start with a good picture to edit, but the vast changes you can do, and with such ease, IMO top-notch equipment might be less effective than top-notch editing skills...just my opinion...

We are starting to get some better pictures. But really this camera is for snapshots of our kid, horses, dogs, and Cruisers. I have no ambition on becoming a professional photographer. I just want some good photos of the stuff I enjoy.

I have the Canon 250D also and LOVE it. I have had many different camera's and will not be going back. Thee only problem with the Canon is the kit lens has a bit to be desired. I picked up a 28-135 from ebay and a 10-22 Wide angle for landscape shots and am completely happy. You cant go wrong with the 350D.

Update, I'm having good luck with the camera. Costco did a price drop to $799 for their Rebel XT package. I walked in and told them I just bought it a few weeks ago and I had $105 in my hand moments later. I really like the camera. Plus I love Costcos no hassle customer service. Here is one of my favorite photos so far. Boy when you shoot 3MB files it takes a lot of reducing to post.

Cool...I really wanted to buy it through Costco, for their great customer service and return policy, etc...but at the time (maybe still) all they sold were the silver Rebel XTs, and I just couldn't bring myself to buy a silver one...I think the black looks soo much more professional...ofcourse I'm not a professional, but the camera looks good... :)

You are correct they only sell the silver.

I'm into function over beauty. I fyou ever saw my Cruiser you would believe it.

I have a regular Pentax SLR film camera that is also silver so I've been over the color deal for a long time.
