Desperately need help w stripped oil pump cover screw

If you tap a bit in the screw firmly with a brass hammer, a good solid hit, they will usually come right out. I usually use a small sharp flat chisel to loosen stripped screws by hitting the chisel into the edge of the head and then hit it in the direction to loosen it. This method takes patience, but it works. If the screw is very damaged, then drilling the head off may be the best way.

You should be able to use a sharp chisel at an angle to walk it out. If it doesn't, use the same chisel to just break the lips of the screw off so you can just pop the head off and work it out with a pair of pliers or vice grips. From the looks of yours, I'd try one thing before that. Pound a Torx bit into the hole. From what I can tell from the picture, a 25-30 looks like it should fit snugly.

Where are you in SF ?

So of course, there had to be 1 out of 7 that gets stripped. I tried using craftsman's bolt out with my right angle impact only to make a crater. Any adivce? JB Weld a bit to it? Any one in San Francisco would like to help? Thanks.

I'm no mechanic, but I've done this a few times and drilling it out only takes a few minutes and you're done. Good luck.

Lurking here, but what's the benefit of a small electric impact versus using a breaker bar with the appropriate adapter to get the screws out? I watched Clay's YouTube video and he used a small impact too. Why is that a better approach? Thanks.

The problem is rounding out the phillips head screws mostly because they are plugged with grease/dirt and often the wrong size phillips head driver is used. I think most just use screw bit and ratchet.
Good thread here

What about the screw head removers. Ex. Grab-bit, etc -you can get at lowes. When I did my cover I used a dewalt 20v impact and impact rated #3 bit. Luckily no problems but I think I would have had enough room for a grab-bit bit or something.

if u run out of a option just drill the head of the screw out and take the oil cover off then use plier to take them out 1 by 1 like mine it's much easy and cheaper than to buy all the other screw out tools some of them don't work

Just FYI, Original post is from two years ago.

I think that is well understood. Not answering the OP's question either. This is correct form in my opinion so that data collects on topics in fewer threads rather than every question being a new thread and we end up with a mind field of crap.

isnt this a jis bit application? I have been looking for a jis to use but cant find a jis bit that will fit my right angle impact...
im currently doing the valve cover, then the distributor o ring, then this seal, does anyone have the appropriate jis head i can borrow purchase for this one time application? i already have the replacement hex bolts to replace these with.

I came across this video the other day when looking for a rotor leak video.
This guy had the same problem when fixing an oil pump leak. That part starts at around the minute 22
