lol,
Oh my god Becky...

Sorry for the diversion, back to your regularly scheduled discussion on winches..

My DD model has oil plugs on both sides, so "invertible." Glad these things have longevity. Hope to get her going on Sat!!!

Will report back.

Thx,
LR

lcwizard- Assume we're talking about the solenoids
back to the winch.... I called the guy I gave the winch to. All he did was clean us the wiring around the solenoids and it's running fine.
I guess 14+ years sitting dormant in the elements didn't kill it
Assume we're talking solenoids in control box mounted under hood, correct? They currently click in both directions with no motor/drum movement.

Cheers!

Don't know where he had them. When I got it there was a box with solenoids on the passenger floor board. The winch had been disconnected

If you want better reliabilty look into contactors rather than solenoids.

Here's a couple, US made mil spec

Search: Gigavac Sealed Contactor 12V

most gigavac contactors are waterproof, shockproof and built to over a 50,000 cycle life. Very popular in mining and military applications.
I think they are a step above Albright

Gigavac has spec sheets on all their product. Check out the specs on the MX14 ( one of my favorites)....it's a 400 amp contactor that will handle 1000amps for 90 seconds or 2000 amps for 10 seconds

Again, if you hot wire it and the motor runs, the solenoids are probably bad. If one of the 4 solenoids is bad, the others can still work in the opposite direction, so if it won't run in either direction, the motor may be bad.

The classic contactor for 8-12K winches is the Albright DC88P. One replaces 4 of the old school solenoids.
