Good morning everyone! I am currently getting a 1993 LC 1fzj-fe in order and have noticed the engine does not like to catch when I downshift in order to engine brake. The truck shifts great, the engine runs mostly right, but if I down shift, instead of slowing, the truck just coasts down the mountain like it is in neutral. If I brake hard and slow the truck a lot it will catch. Do you all think this is the torque converter?

4 speeds have long ass gears so even though you selected a gear it might not be in the parameter to drop a gear in the box due to engine speed etc.

What i noticed: (uphill)
2nd gear shift range is 45-50mph
3rd gear shifts past 65mph

So if you are at 50mph on 3rd and you manually shift to 2nd you should see the RPM spike a tad maybe from 2200 to 2500

When im driving down a grade I play with OD On/Off to get some engine braking. Unless it's somewhat steep, I manually drive down the hill on 2nd gear and 1st if super steep like 45ged grades

IMO something not right.
In my 94 down shift and I get almost immediately engine breaking in all gears.

Yes you are correct i too get an instant engine braking on downshifts....im heading over the Sierras this weekend, and i never paid attention but I will report back.

Have fun. It’s beautiful up there.

My 4speed catches and slows me down as soon as I downshift. She has 320k miles.

The delayed engagement is an issue from the sounds of it, especially when it feels like it went into neutral. That sounds to me like zero engagement.

Word, interisted to see if and how this gets resolved. He said it finally engages when he hits the brakes hard. Odd one.

It feels like it sticks in neutral when I down shift, this is under 30mph on dirt roads in the mountains. I rebuilt the front axle this weekend and have not got to mess with it more, but I will try to post what I find, if I am able to fix it. The truck needs a lot of help and there are a few issues that are seem more pressing.

You did check the trans fluid level right ?
