I was on the road Tuesday driving FJ60 with the transplanted 3FE and after a short stop the engine would not start. Could not hear the fuel pump running and assumed the FP had died since it's ca. 18 yrs old with >200k miles on it. Called @Land Speeder and he came with a trailer and we towed the 60 back to my place. Dove in today and did the troubleshooting.

Jumped the TE1 and E1 ports for diagnostics and the CEL came back normal.
All fuses are good.
Checked the fusible link, all good there.
Jumped the FP and B+ ports and the pump ran and had good pressure at the cold start injector.
Removed the wire between FP and B+ and fuel pump would not run, this indicated that the circuit opening relay (COR) may be bad.
COR is located under the passenger side kick panel and is clearly labelled. I had a spare COR, plugged it in and the 3FE fired right up. :D

Did this experience make you pine for a 2F?

Although your story had a happy ending. It's disturbing nonetheless.

I did the 3FE swap into the '85 FJ60 ca. 18-19 years ago and for many years it was the family Cruiser. Over this time it's been very reliable, only two other parts have failed rendering it dead, a fuel pressure regulator and EFI main relay. About 8 years ago it was relegated to farm duty so isn't driven as much. If this were my DD I'd carry spares and would be more in tune with what could fail. I think the 3FE is just as reliable as the 2F but there are a few additional electrical components that can fail.

My 2F:3FE ratio is 2:1 :D. The FJ40 still has the 2F and my other FJ60, a DD, is 2F'd. I put a lot of miles on the DD FJ60 in a year and carry enough tools and spare parts to take care almost anything.

FI has it's advantages and couple of years ago I bought a stock FJ62 with the intent of using it to do a 2FE swap into my DD FJ60. I am having second thoughts about this considering the rapid loss of OEM parts. If I do not go 2FE I will at least have plenty of spares for the 3FE, in fact I pulled the relay from this parts pile to get the 3FE running.

The FJ60 is too great of a vehicle to give up on and I'll be driving mine as long as possible.

Dang, was looking forward to you doing that 2fe. I'd be curious to see the side by side comparison with the stroke being the only difference. I do love your red 60 though

It may still happen. Time is the biggest factor for now. I started stripping down the wiring harness last night which I've putting off for months. First goal here is strip out the wiring for the electric windows and locks.

In digging into the wiring harness I noticed that there are several common relays with the same 5 prong pattern that the COR has, I think one of these would serve as a COR substitute if needed. I'll post up the part number on these relays later.

most relays follow a form convention and would be interchangeable give a few things- coil voltage, contact amperage and contact form(SPST;SPDT;DPST; DPDT)...

that would be interesting to see. makes me glad to have a spare cor in the truck. as for the main, i just got a generic SPST at checker, been working fine for over a year and saved myself about 100 bucks

Main EFI relay is NLA. I had to do the same with replacing the EFI with a generic relay.

I'd have a hard time spending 100 bux on any relay...
