97 80 with week old battery, replaced as old one died after a normal 5 year life. She replaced it while I watched on FaceTime, so no "whoopsie" issues with this and no reason to believe this new issue is related.
Tonight, with it sitting 6 hours while she was at class, she turned the key and nothing - no click or anything. Dash lights and headlights came on (we keep our headlamp switch on at all times) as normal but no starter relay click. While we were talking, and she tried again, the key was in the prestart position (idiot lights on, turning any further engages the starter) and suddenly everything went off. Like everything. I had her try the emergency flashers, map light, move the seat, zippo.

While we were talking and nothing had changed - she did not touch the key still in the prestart position - the headlamps guage lights and idiot lights mysteriously came back on. I had her put the trans in N, but when she turned the key, nothing. She left the key in the prestart position while I had her try a few things, and a minute later everything turned off again while she and I were talking and she was not doing anything.

Wondering if it was a ground issue, I had her use jumper cables from the battery ground to the engine's lift eye. Nada.
Had her pull the EFI Main fuse and replace it with a new spare. Nada.
Had her loosen the stud on the positive battery clamp where a lot of wires are and her husband had arrived to wiggle those spade connectors while she looked at the dash for signs of life. Not a blink or wink. Tightened that back down. Did same on positive battery clamp - wiggled to no avail (this was just cleaned for the new battery of course).
A few years ago, I replaced a relay in the driver's kick panel I believe is called the "no current relay" for a no start issue. I don't remember the symptoms beyond no start but mentioning it here.
They are on the way to get a volt meter right now. Any thoughts? \

Update, looks like the positive terminal was the culprit. They'll get it home tonight, then do a proper cleaning of the terminal with sandpaper.
Good night all!!

Glad to hear that it’s sorted. Years ago I was in a similar situation in central Nevada. Thought it was the fusible link, but it turned out to be a loose connection at the battery.

Exactly where my mind was going, but luckily I have the log with me and I show I replaced the fusible link about 15k ago when I did major prep for her. Whew in the light of morning, I am super thankful that's all it was. At 319k, you start thinking of all kinds of random age-related issues. I'm heading down there to visit in a few weeks, and while there will replace the leaking heater valve on the firewall and both rear lock actuators. Parts are already down there.

As with most things, it's simply the last thing you did. If it wasn't doing this before, then the new battery and the terminal connections HAVE to be the cause. As 80 owners, we immediately jump to knuckle studs and head gaskets,...
