Dash mock up - input needed

Nick,

What are they going to charge you for the work?

I drop off my template at the CNC shop today. They are going to put it into CAD and then email me a proof. I ended up making it smaller and keeping my stock ashtray (which I may still make it into something else). I have 2 guages w/ 2 rows of Rockers switches w/ 4 switches per row.

That is what made me go from 4 gauges to 2. Those vents take up prime real estate behind the dash. I bought some autometer angle rings which give me a little more clearance and allow me to cheat a little closer to the vents. I should be able to tell how it is going to fit w/ my 2 gauges once I get my proof back.

Not sure yet. The template I gave to the CNC said the it didn't leave enough room for the plasma to cut it. I've sent it to a guy that has a laser and he's going to look at it and give me a quote. Depending on how it looks and costs, if anyone else wants one, let me know and I'll come up w/ a price.

Here is what it is looking like right now. I have to make a few more changes to get everything to fit, but this should be the basic layout. It is roughly 8"x5".

Gauge and switch cluster for center of dash

I'm going to start another thread to see if anyone would be interested in these if I had some lasered out for a mini production.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out :)

My plans are to laser cut a whole new center section, cut out the original dash between the speedometer and the glove box, and weld in the new panel...

The new panel will have all the Carlingtech Contura switch panels, and the AC controls, and a double din Navigation radio.

Just a few more critical projects to tackle first. :)

I have this OEM '74-'77 center section available if anyone wants to stay with a stock look.

I don't have a current picture; I'll try to get one tomorrow. Here is one before I had all of my switches in. I'm really happy w/ the way it turned out BTW.

I have decided that I want to put in a custom dash piece to accept a few more gauges, switches, and buttons. I plan on going with the same lines as the glove box door and the instrument cluster have and will have it cut out of 1/8" either steel and have it painted or aluminum to match my after market gauge cluster. I whipped up a quick sketch as to what it might look like. I'd like some input on what others would put in a new dash group. I wanted to add a trans temp gauge for my 700R4, Voltmeter, and air pressure gauge for when I add on board air (eventually). These will be angled towards the drivers seat using autometers angled holders. I'm sure I've forgot something. To give you some specs on what I have already:
  • Flaming River tilt column w/ hazards and blinker on column
  • Ignition is to the left of the steering column
  • Wipers are to the left of the steering column
  • Left turn signal to the left of steering column (obviously )

Guage cluster has:
  • Tach
  • Speedo
  • Oil Pressure
  • Engine Temp
  • Fuel
  • High Beam Indicator
Take a look at it and let me know what you would change, add, move, etc.

I started this with just a piece of sheet metal. A long ways to go yet. Your mock up looks great!

HELP

Big favor, where did you get the green dash photo? I need to have my dash restored to OEM condition thanks to PO making holes all over. Can you help pointing me the way? Thanks

BTW Mine is a 1970 FJ40, no radio.

that photo was a picture of my dash I took before the install. I used photoshop to add my rough cutout.

It looks as though you and I have a very similair design solution. I like the reverse lights idea and the winch power toggles you have incorporated. I wish I had put more room in mine for exapnsion like that. As it is now, mine has only afew extra spots.

Which instruments are you using? I'm thinking about doing the same setup; dual speedo/tach and quad gauge.

I am using the Autometers. I have had no problems with them thus far, aside from the lighting being a bit too dim.
