Depending on the name, it might be an unselfish public service being performed. Take Larry for example. Gary Larson frequently used 'Larry' as the butt of his jokes in his Far Side cartoons. He was doing his best to keep people from naming kids Larry. He did it with humor, while some of us do it with personality.
