How is this working out for you? What kind of weight are you carrying on your rack? I missed looking at your posts back in December. While it looks & appears to be solid for static weight, what concerns me is the lateral <> stresses that it will be exposed to with vehicle movement. There is little if any gusset type support that I can see in your collar to "triangle" bracket joints. The brackets being relatively short is a good thing - less leverage. I'd keep a sharp lookout on your welds and that area to be sure you're not getting any stress fractures. The natural flex of the brackets is a good thing, but it might work against you at the collar/bracket joint without gusset reinforcement. But otherwise, it looks like a very creative, light weight mod to the original Yakima design.
I only have the 4 crossbars on there right now. After I made these I purchased a 5x8 enclosed trailer which now carries all of our camping gear so there's room for all 6 of us in the 80. Can't address your load questions, I've only stood on them on the roof, but never while moving . Ive strapped lumber and such up there without issue. The 4 cross bars carry my 2 bike racks, snowboard racks and ferring. No issues with those. The mounts seem very strong with no movement at all, I can grab a crossbar and rock the entire truck without the mount moving.

Update & outside pics please?

Did you ever resolve the latch handle to door contact?
I'm trying to find some type of budget latch myself. I can't pay $150 for traditional type latches.
My L bracket will be 4.25" tall looking to fit something in there.
Will you get a total height measurement for me?

Pictured is a E313 from RV Design
Latch is total 4³/⁴, length with mount is 5"

So no RTT, spare tire or loaded water or gas containers. Bulky, weather proof, but relatively light weight items seem to go perfect on the roof rack. The trailer was an excellent idea. I'm eventually going that way myself.

Ended up cutting the top part of the bracket and using the collar clamps as the top piece. Worked out great. Had to bend the clips up to stay out of the way of the doors, haven't decided on a permanent solution for this. Still need to paint. Will probably do that this weekend. Very happy with the outcome. Here's a few pictures

So I'd have to measure to be sure, but this looks to be just about the same height as my Yakima bars and I'm using their standard 1A gutter mounts.

Sorry to bump an old tread, but @Jgrauman how is the rack holding up? Your triangle braces might be the solution I have been looking for to put a Yakima rack on my BJ73. Since Toyota decided to put a gutter over each door and then along the back door it makes finding a way to put my canoe and things up there difficult at best.

Yakima has a perfect mount for rain gutters. Very solid mounts. Have been using them for years.

I've got a set of those from my 62, and agreed they work great. The problem is that I need to make a T-junction with them to get it to work on the 73/74 series FRP top. Here is what I have going right now with three contractor bars (I would rather use my Yakima rack though, since these are discontinued and I cannot find a 4th to make a square)
