canvas tops

I have enjoyed all the postings about the top I made for Mike. The job took way too long, but I am 95% (very high standards here) pleased with how it came out. Mike wanted the top duplicated in design with the fasteners and all. I was happy when I was able to find the buckles, but not on the price. The pricing of the top was very difficult to come to. I made peanuts with all of the time and cost of materials involved and could not charge what I had into this top. The material (Happich pearl beige) chosen was unfortunately very expensive. I priced the top the same as our Badger I FDS (fabric door seal) in Haartz twillfast topping which is $2200.00 . The german canvas cost $200.00 more just in yardage. The rear curtain was probably the biggest headache. I had to made 2 of them because the first one was not working. The question was do I make the top to the vehicle or make it symetrical for production purposes? I made the patterns for production. The issues that will always crop up will be how original and straight is the hoop set, which means the level of fit will vary between vehicles. I am very picky when it comes to making patterns, fabrication and stitch work.

I have recieved emails and calls about the top and would like to make a top for the FJ 40, just need one with an original hoopset to design the top on.

When I was in High School, I wanted a Land Cruiser but they were a bit more than I could afford. So I bought a Land Rover for less money, and still drive it 32 years later. Maybe I need to look at buying a Land Cruiser again.

Funny I was the opposite...i always wanted a Land Rover and got a Land Cruiser some years latter...and been driving it almost 20 years....i have awhile to catch up to ya.

Chris your company comes to us being well respected in the Land Rover community...and within the MVPA circles.

I have seen many a top made by your company...Great quality...and ( i know it is not news to you ) at a large cost...BUT...you do get what you pay for...Quality is not an issue with ANY tops i have ever saw...from series to defenders.

do you have any other pics from the fj25 top?

interior? closeups?

Chris,
Before you venture into the 40's take care of us 25 guys.......... :) Seriously, if you have a couple requests for the early top (I'm interested at around that price, like to look at different material) and want to do a small production run I can part with my truck and bows for a few months.

Johnny C,

I followed on of the links at the bottom of your post- TLC FST Canvas & Maintenance. Why do people ask you about canvas?

Sew on and sew on....

people ask...because people want it (canvas) :)

looking for that authentic look

Not to throw something else at you but there is a need for older Nissan Patrol tops as well. I have an original L60 however the previous owner retained the frame. I love the look of your products and also understand the requests for canvas. If I manufacture my own top, I plan on using a quality canvas to retain some originality.

Guys, I wanted OD canvas originally too but once I got talking to Chris, and compared samples of materials to Phil's original top, the colors are almost exact. I got that faded weathered color but in a much better material.

JohnnyC,
I think he means why do people ask YOU.

Chris,
JohnnyC is our resident soft top expert, that's why people ask him.

That is more of what I was looking for as an answer. The description on care of the cotton duck canvas and such was spot on. I asked because it seemed that he knew quite a bit. Of course that list is much shorter when talking about Haartz twillfast or Happich sonnenland topping.:)
