Events/Trails Cruisers on the Rockies 3: July 27-31 2026 Silverton Colorado-REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!!

Three part question here:

1. Anyone headed over from Texas wanting to caravan? I'm probably leaving Sunday to stop part way since 14.5 hrs is a bit much for me in one sitting personally. Goal would be to make it a big chunk of the way so that Monday isn't too bad and could be a bit of a wheeling day before check in opens. Lots of places to stop between here and there depending on where everyone is coming from

2. Separately--who will be there early enough Monday that we could maybe get a late morning pre-event trail run organized?

3. Lastly--I've got a buddy flying in to join from Wednesday through the weekend so we can go fishing for his birthday. His wife was not stoked when we did the Alpine Loop a few years back and he is under strict instruction to not do any "dangerous" trails. In other words, I'm not allowed to take him on shelf roads where the drop means thousands of feet down. I thought I remember the Poughkeepsie shelf road or the trail that leads to Poughkeepsie (Mineral Creek?) being above a valley "only" a few hundred feet up. It's my favorite trail out there and he hasn't done it so I'd like to take him, but want to respect his wife's boundaries and not put him in a position he'd be uncomfortable with. Does anyone remember how sketchy that shelf road was because I didn't remember it being awful? Any other recommendations for trails that would fit the criteria? It's so tough bc even stuff like Ophir has that one section of shelf road.

I'm planning to hit the road from Austin early Sunday with my "adult" (18/21) kids, but not totally settled on where to stay yet. We did Palo Duro on the way up in 24, and there's Merus right near there, but that adds ~2 hours to the total trip time. Roswell is the true halfway mark from here, but I'm leaning toward pushing into Santa Fe on Day 1 to make the Monday drive easy and get in early. I'm just a little less than thrilled at the prospect of leaving a loaded truck in a hotel parking lot.

Moriarty, Edgewood are good options that are on the route without any detours and a respectable distance from Austin if you leave early enough. I've done the drive to/from Austin 5 times in the past year with my son going to school there. Santa Fe is kind of a detour with the direct route being up 550 from Bernalillo. Have you looked at rooms at Santa Ana casino in Bernalillo? I think they have decent roving security of their parking lot. There is a KOA in Bernalillo that might have cabins to rent and it's way off the beaten path. I've heard lots of people give positive reviews of that location. I'd offer to let you crash at my place in Sandia Park but I won't be here because I'm leaving on Friday for a couple days on the San Juan River before heading up to Silverton on Monday.

But he's home for the summer and in Sept heads to Japan for a 1-year internship so I don't have any plans to be in TX for a while. I'll trade for some NM craft brews.

That would be most excellent. Hopefully they're stocking it all the way up north in DFW. The brewery is in Blanco and I found the beer in HEB in Austin. What is your beer type (or spirits) preference? I will trade for a thoughtfully curated selection from NM microbrews. Local Costcos carry about 47 different varieties of IPA (if you're into that sort of thing, which I'm not) and I can branch out a little farther and find the good stuff at the local grocery stores or Total Wine. Oh, to find me at camp, I'm driving a stock, white, 2015 LX570, with NM plates, and it will be parked next to a Jayco JayFeather Micro 19' travel trailer and my daughter's silver '99 UZJ100 rocking gold Heritage Edition wheels.

Hard to go wrong with any option; I’m a huge fan of the drive up to Kite Lake. At least in my experience it’s often a less travelled trail. I’m also not certain if Governor Basin is open all the way to the actual basin, I thought the road is closed at the turnoff to Sidney Basin for the summer. Don’t quote me 100% as I might have misunderstood what I read.

For you, I'm willing to share, but that privilege isn't extended to everyone for REALLY good beer that is hard to get unless you live in TX. Real Ale doesn't distribute outside of TX, for the most part. I have yet to make a pilgrimage to their brewery in Blanco. Their Quadrupel is very good and very close to an authentic Belgian Quadrupel without paying the penalty of not living close to Belgium. I'd rate it up there to be nearly equivalent as a La Trappe, St. Bernardus or even a Kasteel Donker.

These repairs are essential for safety and for the long-term stability of the area. The current estimate for reopening is Wednesday, July 22, weather and site conditions permitting, and the Town will provide immediate notice if the timeline changes."
