Not looking to get flamed. We have not been on an organized event. Looking at your trail difficulty chart, we have driven on 3+ to maybe mild 4 type trails. We have a stock FJ Cruiser.
1)Is Cruise Moab good for newbies looking to learn or would we be out of place?
2)Is a stock FJ Cruiser out of place?
3)We know about the July FJ Summit, but July may not work due to other obligations.
If you wouldn't recommend Cruise Moab, any other suggestions?

Thanks for the guidance.

Max.Powerzz - The Overnight run is very full. You shouldn't have a problem finding a place to store your stuff while you're out on Thursday; CM participants will have the bulk of the camping spots. If you need help, hunt me down and I'll find a place for you.

WyoCruiser - Yes CM is a great place for a stock FJ. You'll be limited to easier trails primarily by your "small" tire size. Most of the wheeling in Moab is "slickrock". Slickrock is really sandstone and provides GREAT traction, even with stock tires. You'll find the people at CM to be very helpful & patient. You'll want to register soonest, as there are only a few spots left. :)

thinking about going to this event. it'll be my first time ever! what would be a good trail to run?

Is your 80 locked? Lockers or your driving experience will likely be your limiting factors.

If you're NOT locked, you can run anything up to a 5 rating.

If you ARE locked, technically you can run any of the trails.

I see that you drive an 80 on J's & 35's.

Since it's your first time there, my recommendation would be to start with one of the 5 trails, and work your way up from there.

Fins and Poison Spider mesa are great trails to start with.

If you're locked & want more of a challenge, Steel Bender & Metal Masher could be good starting choices. We don't require armor, but at this level, you'll want to have sliders, at least.

It sounds like you're prepared to run some of the more difficult trails.

There are many that are signed up for harder trails. I don't understand what you mean by "it doesn't show in the list of trails to participate in"?

We have a few trails that are full and won't show on the list for particular days. By and large, though, most trails are still open or have a wait list.

Shoot me a PM if you have specific questions.

oops my mistake. i chose the novice group that's why the other "difficult" trails are not showing

Preparation for Cruise Moab

I will be attending Cruise Moab for my first time this year. I understand that there is a vehicle inspection prior to allowing vehicles to run on the trails. What does this inspection involve? Also, what should I bring with me with me with respect to recovery gear for on the trail (I will be doing level 4 & 5 trails)?

For vehicle inspection: Home of the Toyota Land Cruiser Association - Vehicle Inspection Requirements is the general. CM has their own specs up somewhere. I know they want everyone to have a CB this year and you can't get tech'd without one. Basically they are looking to see if everything is functioning and safe. Batteries tied down, no leaks, etc... Usually the newer rigs pass with flying colors. Oh and make sure your eBrake works. Oh and a fire extinguisher!

For recovery gear, a strap without hook ends, shackles to attach the strap, a high lift jack, and whatever tools and parts you might need for a trail side repair.

CM is an awesome event whether you are a beginner or an old timer. It is sort of like going to a family reunion but with a really nice family. Everyone will give you a hand if you have problems.

I really am going nuts that I don't get to go again this year. I haven't been since 06, but have been a half a dozen times. It is a great event.

ginericLC,

Thanks for the advice. I will go check out the websites with the vehicle inspection information.

I am really looking forward to this!!

Eric's comment are right on track. The TLCA inspection requirements are used to create our event tech sheet.

Last year, First Aid kits and fire extinguishers were the items that were commonly missing from vehicles. You will not pass until you produce one.

Make sure you have a copy of your current insurance card (had to call a couple of agents from the tech line last year ;) )

People with older or modified rigs need to be aware that, for environmental reasons, we REQUIRE a coolant recovery system. Please have that done prior to the tech inspection (water bottle and duct tape in a pinch :hillbilly:)

CB radio IS REQUIRED for all rigs at CM2009

I am the CM09 Safety Chairman, please feel free to PM if you have tech specific concerns.
Thanks for coming:cheers:

what would consist of a coolant recovery system?

 My terminology may make it sound more complex than it is .... the factory overflow bottle on an 80 would be considered coolant recovery system.

Many older trucks just have a hose running out of the radiator neck. That hose needs to have a reservior of some kind to prevent coolant from going straight to the ground.

Thanks for asking

Is there a way to be put on standby, say for someone registering and then bailing last minute. Myself and a Roams were coming out with the IPOR crew next week but now they aren't going to have Roam's truck complete in time to go. I am deploying to Iraq in May so this will likely be my last chance for a real run before I go.

We're coming to Moab that week regardless but we'd sure love to join you.

If someone can't make this, would you please pm me. thanks.

Email sent.

I will sell you my spot for what I paid for it.

I don't think my rig will pass the inspection, custom length e-brake cable is taking for ever. With the long list of other items to do, taking time to hard wire in a CB did not make the list.

Send me a Pm if you are interested.
