Bought an 80 series from marketplace. Had an intermittent start and no CEL. Took it to a mechanic and they got the CEL to turn on and had code 12. Noticed the ignition coil wire was not seated properly and put it back into place. Next day, took the car on some errands, cranked and started perfectly every time with the CEL on. Next day, car has no CEL and just cranks.

The car used to start up intermittently before placing the loose wire inside the ignition coil and would not start on a hot start. Had to wait for cool down until it started.

Any idea on how to tackle this? Going to buy a voltmeter today.
Asked on Facebook groups and some say “distributor” “ignition coil” “efi relay”

I don’t see how those would cause the CEL not to light on the dash.

Knowing the model year in question helps us help you. Start by checking that coil wire again and all fuses including the fusible links just off of the positive battery terminal. These are often the culprit.

There is a fuse labeled ECU-IG in the middle row of the interior fuse panel. I had a crank with no fire problem years ago and it turned out this fuse was loose in the fuse block.
