Cracked 2F block-Should I weld?

The pisser is that this is a used engine I purchased last summer, no returns. It is installed and it cost me about $400 to have it put in. I don't have the cash to pull it again and buy another shortblock. I bought the engine to replace the original with 217k that had just gone through its second head.

I phoned a machine shop here and spoke with the manager. He actually advised against welding and instead using an epoxy. I mean I can grind the block and clean it up for an epoxy, but will this really hold?

I do have another concern. If freezing water caused the jacket to expand and crack, would it have caused any other problems internally. I mean, expansion occurs uniformly, not in one direction....right?

sounds like a good job though

Took the rig to the radiator shop on Monday for a power flush. All systems go.

This evening I drove it 4.6 miles home...two blocks from the house I lost power, yellow smoke then the billowing white cloud......of death.

I am out of cash, patience, spousal support....

Ahh, man! I feel for you.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out...definitely sucks.

Unbelievable bad luck. Get rid of the truck, even give it away. Life's too short for the kind of grief you're getting from it.

You tried and you have not failed. There's just some kind of a karma mismatch at work. Accept it and move on to whatever is next.

Thanks for the comments fellas. I have been very surprised by my misfortune as I think I made good decisions all along the way. I think in the end, I paid a bit too much (total 2200) for a not-so mechanically sound rig. I ran into major engine problems (two cracked heads, one fully replaced engine, cracked block)....and basically ran out of cash. I'll never get the 3k I have in parts and labor back.

I am inclined to give it away to a friend interested in a V8 conversion, or might post it on ebay for parts. If I had the storage opportunity and time in the next 6 months, I might have held onto it.

Regardless, thanks to the board for their help on this immediate problem (cracked block) and at other times. I am grateful.

no.... dont get give the rig away just try to find a 2f motor and put it in there.... there are a few that are being giving away but there in CA

This weekend I went to retrieve the FJ60 from a gas station...where it sat for a 4-5 days. I had a friend with me in another rig and some tow straps.

On a whim I tried to crank her over and much to my surprise, she fired right up. I put her in gear quickly and booked home 2 miles. Seems like a crack opened up and closed after cooling.

I had a dog like this once. She was about 20 years old as well and perked right up before we had to put her down. She was wagging her tail and running around the VEt's office before she got the needle.

I don't know what I'll do...but will probably try tuning the carb adn timing by vacuum to see if I can get her running right.

The saga continues....

My water jacket crack is/was INVISIBLE except when the engine is warm. The rig can sit for a week and nary a drop will weep from it. It only opens up under use.

Old thread....updated.

I spent about 5 hours on the rig this weekend. Most of the excess engine heat and loss of power seems to be the result of bad carb tuning and timing. I was able to make the adjustments necessary to get the temp gauge back down to the middle range. I replaced the choke cable and adjusted the throttle plate accordingly. As well I adjusted the high adn low idle, and fuel mixture. Now the temp is way down.

I still am running a slightly elevated idle and seem to be losing power until warm....but am thinking this is carb/timing related rather than anything else (cracks, etc.).

The crack repair on the block seems fine.

Good :D
