Chmura, what are your thoughts on the difficulty of the Bishop side route? Is it in the territory of stock 4X4's with low range (usually is, just checking....)?

we arent towing just any old trailer.

8 gallons of bug juice, don't forget the important stuff :grinpimp:

" What is bug juice in the Navy?

'Bug juice” is the traditional U.S. Navy term for the sweet sugary beverage served on ships.Nov 17, 2014 "

So Tyler needs to bring this?

I really meant bug juice as in repellent. Someone posted they were eaten alive up there even wearing several layers of clothing.

That's the benefit of waiting until August to head up there. During the snow melt you get serious bugs. Once it dries out they are gone too.

I hope that is the case, mosquitos are no fun. Better to take some juice and not need it from my perspective.

The humidity is presently 13% at Funnel Lake so unless there is a lot of rain between now and August we will be Ok as far as bugs go.

You definitely need to be modified to get through the route. Stock vehicle will not make it at all. Rear locker is needed as well (both front and rear even better) as open diffs will not cut it on this trail unless you want to slide off the trail and roll your vehicle.

Once I get sliders on my Tacoma I will go back and do the route. I have 34" tires, rear locker, and king suspension on my Tacoma.

I personally believe end of June beginning of July are the most beautiful times to go. The snowy mountain peaks are very very beautiful. If someone is into photography they will want to capture the peaks with snow on them.

If you find the correct campsite mosquitoes wont be that much of an issue end of June/ beginning of July.

It sounds like the Bishop side got harder after this winter. Last year we had stock GXC470 make it up to Funnel, Baker, etc... with a little underbelly scraping but no risks of rolling. ATRAC, etc.. was good enough to get through the rocks.

Thanks again for the update!

Giving a bump to the thread.

Can we get a head count?

Menu ideas?

Farrah and I with Bogie...coming up on Friday. In for food fun.

Me plus the kids, not sure what day we'll get up there yet. I have a smaller thermacell, they work so well when there's no wind. Reminds me I need to get more butane cartridges.

Mosquitoes are thick. Use that Prime day deal and get yourself one of these Thermacell bad boys. I used one last year and couldn't believe how well it worked. The updated version is usb charge.

Do you think we will have mosquito issues in August? Past trips we had zero bug issues August/September. Where we are camping doesn't have a lake next to it so should be more dry than Funnel or Baker. Though, we did have a late melt this year.

Btw, this site seems to have the best weather forecasts for that area. I put in Funnel Lake so it would find a specific place on the plateau.

You know... I think I may pick this one up instead of getting cartridges. It's like buying razors, they get you on the refills ($45/10 cartridges which they say is 120hrs).

This one runs on butane tanks, you may already have of you run a jet boil, etc... Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repeller, Gen 2.0; Protects 15' Zone; Runs on Camp Fuel Canister; Includes Water-Resistant Bag and 4 Repellent Mats for 16 Hours of Relief; DEET-Free; No Spray; 4 oz.
