Silent Shade Swing Bridge

I had a summer job after my sophomore year in college working on a track crew for the railroad. That was one brutal summer. One day we worked one of these bridges on the White River in NE AR. Bridge was built this way to allow tall boats to pass. For the operation we had to pull track at each end so that the bridge could swing, then once the boat had passed the bridge was swung back in place and the track reinstalled. Pulling the track necessitated pulling spikes, lifting and moving the 4 pieces of rail, putting the rail back in, and driving the spikes.

I'm glad that summer is only a memory and not a recurring nightmare, but the money was good for the time.
