Overlanding my ass off right now...

Here is my point on this. It takes a lot of concrete in the SE US to get to an Overland destination.

If I drive 8 hours to north AR and take a 30 minute gravel road to a campsite, I got no problem with that.

jonesing for another truck camping trip...

What an awesome campsite. I wanna go there! Yeah, Nolen and I are kicking around a trip to NW/NC Georgia that second weekend of November. I know some folks might also be going to Alabammer around that time as well and might hit that area in the way over or back. Specifically, what I/we are looking at is using Helen, Georgia as sort of a base camp/launching point and from there hitting a couple of the routes published on the SE Overland site. Specifically, Beasley Knob and Wildcat Ridge trails.

I am thinking @beno and @BMThiker will have some intel on these spots and whether they are any good. From there, folks could venture out and do whatever they want (hike a portion of the A/T or, chill in an ENO, or, in my case, fly fishing with Unicoi outfitters or possibly spending a half day catching monster trout at Blackhawk).

Some of the forest service roads are along side some of the trout streams and there are primitive camp sites available.

I also purchased this book, which has a bunch of maps and backroads and some fishing info for me (and others interested).

All of this, of course, can be discussed over beers at the crawl.

I know the area around Helen, GA quite well. I led a trip up around that area a few months ago. I know the AT and Benton Mackaye Trail pretty well in Georgia too. Looking for my Gmaps link...can't find the specific one for the last trip, but this one is similar to what we did, a fair bit of road driving between trails, but all relatively scenic byways. If you want a short hike to a cool riverside campsite, then I'd recommend the BMT where it crosses Hwy 60 just north of Suches, GA. Hike the BMT south towards the Toccoa river. There is a massive suspension bridge about 3 mi south of Hwy 60.

but if you aren't up to the even the short hike, there is a way to drive to the south bank of the river in your Expedition Vehicle.

Another set of trails just outside of the Helen, GA area. The AT crosses over the peak at Tray Mtn.
Tray Mtn Roads

Mostly graded FS roads, but Chimney Mtn Road that meanders northerly from Hwy 356 has some fun spots along the way and is definitely not Camry rated.

OK, found the trip map for my last outing. We started in Dahlonega and ended in Helen. In the digital world, Bing doesn't think the road connects btw points E and F, but they do in reality. I enjoyed this run, but don't expect to find any good places to eat unless you stop in Dahlonega or Helen. My trip attendees were getting anxious towards the end of the day because they had little ones with them and didn't pack any road provisions in their vehicles. http://binged.it/1j1fSjf
