Grand junction to durango route you are referring to is south on 50 to 550 correct?

That route would go through ouray and silverton :D

Was thinking about Telluride as well but thats on the other side of the mountain (going off the routes generated by google)

definitely in for a colorado trip for 2012 by the way. would love to do some type of Ultimate Adventure Cottonland trip at some point ( but may ease up on the no trailer rule)

Back on track

I just want to make sure that i avoid any tight switchbacks hauling the 80.

Telluride would be a nice destination for Sheilla if she is burned out on wheeling.

Leave her there to shop and do the Telluride loop to Silverton and back. Awesome day of wheeling.

If we went to Colorado we could just get to Silverton and day trip out of there. I did that with Cobberly and Slee 2 summers ago. It was a fantastic week of wheeling.

Summer 2012.

Back on subject, another nice route home is Montrose due east popping out just south of Pueblo.

I am trying to do my best to avoid 2 trips (there and back) through northwest texas.

Its got to be the most boring drive out there.

Thats the main reason i am trying to figure out a new route back.

Yep, that is why I am going Colorado home.

So are you coming through west Kansas, Wichita area?

Dallas Amarillo albuquerque Cortez Moab route is 1468 miles (25 hours)
Compared to
Moab, grand junction , Denver , Wichita ,Tulsa, little rock canton is 1558 miles ( 26 hours)

Looks like another expanse of nothing, but would be a different nothing.

I better plant more money trees. The diesel bill at $4.00 a gal will be around $1200! Pray for Middle East peace!

and just in time for June, Right?

I'd like to. 15 dominoes need to fall before I can say yay or nay

I hope you own a producing oil well. Crude at $98 a barrel and rising as we speak. Gas forecast is $4-5 a gallon by Summer if the Libya politics don't get straight. That said, if you do go, come through Austin and I'll buy you a pint or three.

The distance may be close, but the fastest way by far is the route up through Farmington. The roads are the best that way and you can move and pass and get after it.

2 nice scenic drives from Moab that I have done are

Grand Junction, Montrose, Salida, Pueblo, Raton, then 64 across to Amarillo. That is the "fastest" scenic drive home or to Moab. Very pretty, but it takes a lot more time as there are 4 mountain passed to deal with.

Another is Cortez, Durango, Pagosa Springs, Santa Fe. This one is slow during the Colorado portion but fast north of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Beautiful drive all the way to Santa Fe from Cortez. If you plan on putting Santa Fe in your route, this is the route to take.

Grand Junction, Montrose, Silverton, Durango is SLOW but the most scenic of all. If you plan on spending night in Durango it is not a bad option.
