Thanks Mike, See you are a nice guy!

....Susan , I see theres a plate on that 100 , so it is insured for the street I would think , right ? But how do you folks convince the insurance company to wrap there heads around such a modded vehicle . Don't they get nervous when they hear whats been done to it , or do you keep that part out of the conversation . As I mentioned to guys in another thread , I merely have the OME suspension and 35's and my insurance company had me at their door within 18 hrs of finding out to photograph everything ! Needless to say I'm switching firms next week ... just got off the phone .

Just curious as to what you divulge ... what coverage is available to you ... and if you've had some rather odd conversations with brokers over the years ... *L*

I'm not Susan, although have been called Nancy Boy before...anyway... :D

As for my insurance company, never told a thing, they didn't ask, I didn't tell. Now if I wanted to have mine insured for more than it's book value then they said I'd have to have it appraised and so on, I checked regarded my FJ40. But on my LX, don't think they need to know, and honestly don't think they would care...the agent would probably just say it was unmodified to make the paperwork more simple...

don't destroy my reputation though. :D

T, I think up in kanukaville the insurance companies are a little more gung ho. Remember too, though, that it may have something to do with the fact that your truck was not from up there.

We have had the same insurance company for almost ten years now, I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. With Alans mostly safe driving and My ability to schooge the officers our record is really good. And I also agree with Mark (Like I often do) on the don't ask don't tell policy. This 100 is not even that modified. Actually, Alan is a bit embarresed of all the attention since this truck is the least modified of all previous vehicles. He just hit the shock factor for taking a saw to a 100!

....This interests me on the off change I end up wanting to buy a heavily modified vehicle . In the back of mind I can't help thinking that in the event of a serious accident , the insurance investigator will easily note the changes to items such as :

  • Vehicle integrity
  • Bumperage
  • Interference with airbag deployment
  • Reduced visibility due to spare tire location
  • Heightened centre of gravity
  • suspension changes

Something tells me that once this professional adds all of this up , he will surely feel compelled in some way to note how these modifications played their part in the crash .. and subsequent injuries to both parties ... and this thought should scare the hell out of us .. because if any of these factors , previously undisclosed , to the broker is even remotely responsible for some portion of the end result , we're probably screwed !

Not trying to be a hardass here , but surely this can't be as simple and naive as nondisclosure ... there are consequences that run far and deep .. I'd be interested in the perspective of the insurance professionals we have on this list . I don't personally have the background to understand what an underwriter looks for in establishing appropriate coverage on a vehicle .. or what boundaries we 'must' stay within to obtain clear and concise coverage ....
???

T, It must be different up there I guess.

No one down here cares. Truck is inspected, then ok, it's legal. Otherwise all the custom shops would be outta biz :flipoff2:

Actually Tyler we do have our trucks appraised and insure them for what their true value is. It's not a big deal for us. I know in Colorado MOST of the vehicles are SUVs trucks or bigger. It's almost not even safe to be in anything smaller than what we have. When we make the truck taller we also make the truck wider. The airbags will deploy earlier if anything, and on the white 80 we had the rear tire was definitly in the way, so we mounted a camera on the back window. Suspension is always an improvement, and when we cut the 100 we did not cut the impact structure of the vehicle, we added to it. We are not some sort of saw happy rednecks who don't reserch and make a educated decision on how to modify our vehicles. If you are that worried then go back to stock. But I personally feel safer in what I am in. Any other questions while I'm on a roll?

....Unfortunate if you mistook my apprehensions of the insurance industry as a criticism or your husbands amazing craftsmanship . I , as you do , feel safer in my modified SUV ...

I think that truck is really really awesome. So he didnt break anything running 37s? If not i think 100s when the price comes down some more will really be a tough truck and will take up after 80s just like what 80 did to the 60 series.

Our 100 is running 38s and no we didn't brake a single thing and it walked up obstacles and made them look easy. We were very impressed!

ooops yeah i ment 38s ... anyway i just wanted to say how awesome that truck is.

Thank you very much! :)

Alan Podvin, builder of "interesting" 80's. ;)

Yours truly supplied the hood and a few other bits :D

His attention span can be a bit short and he tires of his creations sometimes not long after he finishes one.

I bet a guy could buy it from him pretty easy as I'm sure he is already thinking of something else to try.

Wow, nail on the head there. 8)
