The start ignition switch my LX450 is is shot and the replacement ignition switch runs about $130. I’m debating if I should just put that money toward a keyless setup instead. I daily a Tesla so the convenience would be nice, but I’m not sure if the aftermarket push button and proximity systems are reliable or if they cause problems later. Anyone here actually done a push button start and proximity lock setup on an 80?

I never saw the point in a push button start given that you need the key to unlock the steering. I did have a remote start on my '94 which worked well but again was mostly redundant as you still had to move the key to ACC before driving off.
I have one of the trailteq remote entry systems on my '96 which works brilliantly and was about $150. An idiot (me) can install it.

Duh! didnt think about the steering lock. Youre right. There is no point of the push button.

fix it. Do you really think the switch is bad or just the cyl? Keyless start is problematic enough even when it's factory installed.

it seems the cylinder is fine, its the switch. It turns all the way to ACC just fine with all lights and everything but when I turn it to START it wont fire up the starter.

Tested at the switch output? not a super common fail that I've seen.

Mine has done this twice this year. No idea what's happening yet, because it's literally a momentary fault for the time being, but I'm interested to see what you come up with.

Personally, I'm probably going to go ahead and replace my fusible link since it looks old anyway. We'll see if the fault reoccurs after that.

The vehicle has 280,000 miles.
might as well skip the testing and just guess then. You might even be able to take that switch apart and clean it up the contacts if it is bad.
