College cruiser slow build

These are the bumpers I have been working on while the carburetor was in Ohio. The material is some left over 5x2x 1/8 wall rectangle tube from one of my dads projects. I turned them flat so that they can be used to stand on. The rear will most likely get 2 4x4 labs style swing gates for Jerry cans and a full size spare when it gets lifted. The front is going to be modified slightly so that a winch can fit inbetween the valance.

This is the front spring hanger that I have started to make for the shackle reversal swap that I have planned. It is a piece of 3x2x 3/16 wall rectangle tube left over fro my brother's fj40 bumper build. The plate is 1/4 inch. I'm trying to keep the leaf spring pack in it's original location so that I don't disturb the castor angles. The spring hanger will also get tabs to help support the winch when I get it.

Nice. Same color as my 84. Tell me more about this recall?

I also need new set belts all around. Driver is jammed up, passenger, and rear ones don't roll back up.

The recall for the belts doesn't give new belts it actually only gets new guides and little clips that hold the rear belts in place when not in use. Call your local Toyota dealer with the vin and they will check to see if your cruiser qualifies for the tank and rear belt clip recall.

Welcome to the forum. There's a tremendous wealth of information here.

I just got done at the local smog shop in the mountains where I live and the emissions report was awesome. I'm currently at a test only station in Clovis to hopefully reproduce those results and get the GP cleared up. If all goes well I'll call the insurance to get it added and then head over to the DMV to pay the current registration.

Everything went good at the smog test only station and now I have to take a number.

ah, Thanks. I'll give em a call tomorrow.

I was wondering if anyone had any input on an issue I'm having with my carburetor that I got back from fj40jim. It seems that my cruiser is progressivly getting harder to start after it sits over night and after it's warmed up and then sits for a little. It also seems to flood really easy. When I first installed the carburetor it would start up like a champ with the choke out and then immediatley I would push the choke in after being started. Lately though it acts like it's starved for fuel then all of a sudden it has way too much and floods. When I got the carburetor back on and installed it was about 50 degrees farenheight ouside and more recently over the past week it has been in the 70's. Could the air temp be affecting it this much? I don't want to mess with jims tuning because it seems to run like a champ when it is, starting and restarting is what the issue is.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I ordered a bunch of upgrade parts this last week for the cruiser. I also just got back from a 23 day fire assignment on the north rim of the grand canyon, which mostly funded the new parts for performance upgrading. I got the short add-leafs from MAN A FRE, longer brake lines from frame to axle f&r. From CCOT I ordered a tuffy security console, HFS shackles, greaseable pins and bushings and from ebay pedal pads, belts, an additional tuneup kit, and some other misc. blingy performance upgrades as I call them. Last night I had time to get the rear add-leaves in. Tomorrow I hope to get the front add-leaves in to kinda level it out. When the parts from CCOT show up I'll be kinda frantic to get those installed before I head up to Moscow ID, for school on the 10th of August. I'm not sure if I want to wait to get 33's up there or just get em here before I leave. The rubber over drive would be nice for the drive up but I'm thinking wait till I get up there and get the 33's studded and just rum them in the winter as my winter set.

I just got done putting the short add leaves in from man a fre and wanted to see how the spare from my 4 runner would look compared to when I tried it on the back with stock suspension. When I turned the wheel to the right it contacted the front part of the fender well. It is also a pretty bald tire with very little tread height. The size is 315/75/16. I'm considering getting a new set of tires for this rig because the ones that are on it are dated back to 2001. I don't feel comfortable driving them up to Idaho in 3 weeks for school. I'm thinking of getting some 305/75/16's for it which would be the equivelant of 33's. I like the 16's because the sidewalls are a little more weight friendly especially for the heavier cruiser. I'm having a hard time finding a 10" wide 17" wheel that looks good. 17's are becoming more popular and the tires are a little more common than the 16's but from my experience the 16x10x 3.75 backspace my tires wear more evenly and don't crown out. I'll be in the Moscow area fir the next two years. I'm even considering buying an additional set once I get up there with studs for winter driving exclusively.

new stuff

I installed an FZJ80 Master cylinder today along with a saginaw ps conversion, and the extended brake lines from MAF. I'm getting ready for Moscow ID on wednesday and trying to square everything away on this rig before I make the trip to ID. While installing all the new parts today I was checking the universal joints in the rear dline and noticed a little play. Come to find out the rear differential flange has some play in it. I'm afraid it won't make it to ID. I posted for a differential in parts wanted. Wondering if it would be a good idea to switch the front differential in place of the rear if I can't locate one soon enough. There should be relatively low miles on the front and If I put the rear in the front it probably won't see that much use.

I made it up to ui in one piece the first pics are of what the 60 looks like now. I've also been doing some wood cutting to prepare for the winter. I used the same trailer to haul my stuff up from California. I averaged 14mpgs loaded down. I estimated that the entire rig was in excess of 8k. On the 60csx I logged 1400 miles and 24 hours of motion time. There were only a few grades that I had to drop it into second gear on the way up. Momentum and downhills are really awesome. I'm gonna have to do something about the power situation. I actually looked at a bj60 in town guy wants 12k for a rusted out pos non turbo with 300km. Totally not worth it.

They are cabelas trail gear available in grey/tan/cammo. I bought them out of the bargain cave a couple of years before I had the cruiser. They were originally a spare set for my 4 runner. I would like to have the tan color, but oh well they were only 12.00 a pair when I bought them.

Alternator quit working

Last weekend I went north of Bovil cutting fire wood and the alternator showed low output on the way back I have a new one coming from cruiser dan from American Toyota out of NM. Hopefully if gets here so that I can get the cruiser back up and running. Now I know what it's like being away at college with no rig. This is why I'm having my 4Runner brought up so that in the event one of my rigs go down i'll have a spare. There is an alternator shop in Lewiston that I'm gonna have look at my old alternator to see about rebuilding as a spare. I believe it is the original and has lasted 163,00 miles.
