So Chuck and I attended the 4th quarter Colorado Association of 4wheel drive clubs meeting Saturday, and The CLC club is now an official member. I'm pretty happy about the whole deal, this is a great group with a lot of organization and a lot of good people. We were very welcomed by everyone we encountered, and very well received.

The meeting was very typical of our meetings, every table was given a copy of the minutes from last months meeting, as well as a treasurers report, and a copy of the club bylaws that were about to be amended. Seems they have the same obstacles with getting the bylaws changed that we always seem to go through, as we were expected to take a lot of time on this subject until the United four wheel drive associate made a motion to accept all the changes as written... problem solved! Everyone seemed relieved to be through with the issue.

We were fed a nice lunch and Jeff Foxworthy made an appearance while on his Mitt Romney campaign promotion. He kept the talk short, said hello, and mentioned he didn't want to turn our meeting political :) Thanks Jeff...

They were selling raffle tickets for various items, chuck made out pretty good with a tire repair kit, a tool roll-up bag, and some reject mudflaps nobody seemed to want, haha...

As VP of the club, I was asked to address the crowd and speak about our club. Chuck and I put together a summary letting them know about who we are and what we are doing, mostly focusing on our volunteer work with the forest service via the christmas tree runs and vehicle removals. It's pretty amazing to hear about all the volunteer hours going into helping keep trails open, and I'm excited about getting our hours logged into the system. I talked about Saran/ Wreynolds wrap being our adopted trail, mostly because there was another club there that has Eagle Rock as there adopted club and they were discussing putting in a "gate keeper" at the entrance of Eagle rock. I hope we can get together on that.

I was given official membership cards and stickers, so come on out to the next meeting and I'll get those passed out!

What do you mean by gatekeeper? Sounds like you guys had a good time. Chuck must be one of those lucky guys that wins everything. When I went on a trail run once with a raffle at the end, there were 9 of us with only 8 prizes. Guess who went home empty handed.

A gatekeeper is an obstacle right at the start of the trail that is as tough or tougher than the hardest obstacle on the trail. This keeps out the folks who can't make the trail, and end up making bypasses around the tough sections. The theory is that by controlling entry in a place where you can't make bypass, it eliminates those bypasses up the trail.

There was a lot of discussion about middle st. Vrain, they just completed a gatekeeper there and they've been getting a lot of negative feedback that its too difficult. They said the obstacle is an "N" shape. Sounds like a rocker eater.

Thanks Luke and Chuck for attending, sounds like you had a pretty good time. It's nice to have us officially in the organization.

Did they talk much about working with Stay the Trail folks, especially regarding building gatekeepers?

Yeah the guy from CO trail patrol/ stay the trail (matt?) was there talking with us mostly about getting more membership. He had to cut it short and leave early to get to another function in Denver. Super nice guy. I've got a few flyers and booklets I'll bring to the next meeting.

Stay the trail had a representative there and he talked about what they do. They want to be the liaison for all the clubs to coordinate projects. If a club has a project that is more than they can do, Stay the trail will help get the word out to bring in more volunteers.

COa4WDC has 800 members. About 22 people were at the meeting including Luke and I. It was a typical club meeting environment but they did do a good job of sticking to the agenda.

Thanks for the info Luke it makes sense. I heard eagle rock has gotten pretty bad, but that was in July. The guy had 37's on his jeep and was saying he had to winch once. That makes me wonder how hard the gate keeper is going to be.
