I smell Mons Venus!
What the hell have I gotten myself into.

The clutch job I've been studying for in the FSM doesn't look at all like on my 92 2wd PU 22r-e (I have the downloadable 93 FSM). It's weird, it seems to bolt from the front (on the tranny case) back, but I can't find a section on this tranny in the manual.

Any idea what tranny section in the book I should be following? I thought it had the W55, but I guess I'm not sure. Come to think of it, there's no section on the W55 listed...Any help out there?

The only bolts that go in from the front are 2 for the starter (one is actually a stud) and there should be another one on the driver's side, at about the 8:00 position if looking from the back. All the rest go in from the back. 14mm & 17mm bolts, use a long extension and wobble sockets.

KLF, I'm not sure of your orientation. When I'm under the middle of the car, with the tranny overhead, almost every bolt in the housing has been mounted from the engine compartment in; that is, I don't see bolt heads from where I am, only the bottoms of the bolts flush with the housing. (It is not like this in my 88 4x4 22re) Is this right, and will it be a problem?

The one bolt head I see (from under the middle of the car) is in that 8 o'clock position one you mentioned. Did the bonehead that put in my last 11 month clutch reverse the order of the bolts? Could this be contributing to why I already need a clutch again after only 1 year?

Thanks for covering my a$$, man.

Take a look here and tell us what tranny you have.

KLF sounds about right, most bolts go in from the rear except the starter bolts. Pull the drive shafts, and the shifters, and it'll come right out.

This is my first clutch job, and I thought the tranny case looked odd. From under the car looking toward the radiator, there is only one bolt head at @ 8 o'clock; the rest are just flush bolts (cause the heads are on the other side). As I said before, I have an 88 4x4 in the driveway, and it has bolts from the tranny case side through into the engine side.

So in the W55 transmission, most bolts should go from the tranny case bolting into the engine side's clutch housing, and mine are screwed up, right? That bolt at @ 8 o'clock, I should replace that from the front now, right? Lazy SOB was prolly right handed...

I have to say that this just doesn't make any sense. It's not possible for some of the bolts to be installed from the front, the bell housing is not threaded to accept them. The 2 large 17mm bolts at the very top screw directly into the back of the engine block. All 22R-series engines bolt the tranny up the same, they have to be.

Silly question, but are you SURE you're looking at the bellhousing bolts? Maybe you're looking at the bolts that hold the tranny to the back of the bellhousing?

The bell housing I'm looking at connects just in front of the clutch fork. Maybe just the visible bolts (lower ones) are driven from the front, but I don't know yrt. I still have to remove clutch cyl and starter, and haven't seen all of them yet.

Yes, the bonehead had all of the bolts on the bottom half of housing reversed...Autozone to the rescue, with some info better than the FSM.

Only the starter upper bolt, and the two top bolts are left. This is taking some time, but a great learning experience (yes, I'm saying this before I even get the tranny dropped). Next time, I'm sure I could cuss like a drunken sailor a lot more quickly and efficiently. I've already resolved to be down tomorrow, but I at least want to drop this sucker tonight, and get the clutch pulled. Time to slather up with Deet, and work under the 1000 watt shop lights.

Thanks everyone, and please stay tuned to answer goofy rookie questions.

Thanks, guys. Tranny's still got top two bolts, and is being supported by the, yes, I'll say it, transmission jack...was too tired to mess with it. It is chained up nice and secure, waiting for daylight.

Thanks Wrist, I have the 1200 pound Marlin kit. One question about the NAPA NEW flywheel; I thought maybe Marlin sent the wrong pilot bearing, but the NAPA pilot was the same size (@1 inch, and Advance was the same). The trouble is, the hole is @ 1.5 inches. Pardon my ignorance (as the tranny's still on), but besides @ 20 years working as a master mechanic, what am I missing? How's this puppy mount?

Thanks, guys, going slow (and alone, except for y'all), but my first time doing more than a starter or brakes. It's been fun, and educational.

the pilot bearing goes in the crank, not the flywheel. the fly wheel fits over the crank.

now before you mash that old pilot bearing up, removing it the wrong way, here is how to do it

get out your grease gun, completly fill the hole of the pilot bearing. then find a dowel or sonthingsmooth that will fit snug in the hole. as you walk around looking for one, use the new bearing as reference. somtimes a bolt will work, if you find one that has very fine threads.

now once you find the appropriate dowl, insert it in the hole, and smak it with your hammer. this should pop out the bearing.

mind you, dont get a dowel that is too tight, other wise it will be difficult to get it out, if one smack dosent get the bearing out.

Alright, PB is in, and I'm getting ready to slap this puppy together. I just used a tool that looked kinda like a claw hammer, and it popped right out.

Any rule for sorting out bolts? I thought I was keeping a good eye on them, but they have multiplied like rabbits.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

WhooHoooo!

My first clutch job is in the bank thanks to all of you, and frankly, I had no business attempting this...way over my experience. This'll make changing it next time much easier, as I'll simply drop it off at the local shop! Naw, I'll do it.

Clutch is awesome, especially compared to what I received 11 months ago for $350.

On a side note, I'm less than impressed with Marlin's outfit. First, it took @ 10+- days for clutch to arrive, only to find out the wrong clutch kit was sent (Order was online, and answered all info asked for on year/make/model info). When I called, I was asked if I specified my truck was an early 1992 (WTF??), as the clutches totally changed from 1991-1992 (No appreciable body style change), and almost all 92s are a the larger size clutch disk. He also said I'd probably get the same size clutch kit anywhere I ask for a 92 (Ugh, no. Advance, NAPA, PepBoys all knew the right size, without asking the month it was made. It sounded like somebody trying to brush off responsibility for a company mistake (Did YOU specify it was an early 92?). I know mistakes happen, but you've got to own them. We'll see if they intend on crediting me for shipping both ways...

Thanks again, all, for the help.
