Hey guys, I've been hearing this clunking noise coming from the rear. So I take it to the guys who previously put in my 5.29s. I go on the test drive with the mechanic and after taking it over 50mph be hears what I've been hearing. I tell the guy I only hear it when the truck de-celerates. He says its my driveline thats causing the clunking noise. So I ask what would cause that clunking noise. He says it could be my lift and the angle of the driveline may be off. I told him that noise wasn't there before they put in the 5.29s. In short, he tells me to bring the truck on monday so he can look at it.

To me it seems like I began to here the noises probably 600 miles after it was regeared.

So my questions are, Does reagearing have something to do with the clunking noise? Or is this something thats common with 4runners to have(problem wise)?
Is this something I can perhaps fix myself on a weekend?

THX for the help guys. and:cheers:

Remove the rear driveshaft, engage the front hubs, throw it in 4HI, take it for a ride, see if the clunking is gone.

It might be a worn U-joint, or the slip yoke splines. When you lift it in the rear, less of the slipjoint is engaged, so the shorter splines will wear much faster. I had this happen to me. I've since installed plates in the rear that move my rear axle 1" forward, so more of the slipyoke is engaged. No more issues.

Would you guys agree that U joints clunk not diffs? It has been my experience that unless the diff is so worn or set up so poorly, that rarely do they cause that sound. You would have to have a lot of backlash to have the type of audible clunk that most hear.

I would look to the driveshaft and, as some would say, the slip joint or u joint or associated issues with those due to lifting.

The diffs I ruled out, just because I bought them from two very credible members here on MUD. I'll look into the U-joints and slipjoint to see what I find.

Anyone else want to chime in.
