Looks like I almost got hit for $9k from an AI scam. Made the mistake of listing my email address in a thread and almost immediately got an email from the “owner”. I almost fell for it but there were too many discrepancies between the ad and the email.

Are you certain it wasn't a Jedi mind trick Red Leader.
Do you have the scammers email address?

Hey guys, I posted an ad for my 100 series for sale. I’m pretty sure it got deleted due to my lack of posts (I use the site for lots of helpful troubleshooting but don’t post really). If that’s the case could an admin message me and let me know? Thanks!

"For sale soon" is not for sale, and no price was included.

Apologies, at the end of the ad I stated I’m in training (military guy) and wouldn’t Get back until end of October to show the truck. I didn’t want anybody to think they could look at it asap. The price was the last line in the first post.

So, the latest scammer game....

A classified is posted in the forum. You respond that you are interested. You AND the seller are REAL forum members, not scammers.

BUT, the scammer sees the classified, and uses AI/Google/whatever and chases down an email for you.....and you get an email that CLAIMS to be from that real forum member, emailing you regarding that item you want to buy, trying to get you to bite on a deal.

The email they use does NOT match their forum registration email. Their language, typing style, etc does not match what you can read on the forum from their past posts.

AGAIN, report report report!! REPORT! I did some digging today on a suspicious classified transaction via email and it was my "best guess" that it's a scammer impersonating one of our forum members OUTSIDE of the forum.

NEVER EVER post your phone number or email publicly. It IS worth doing a Google/etc search of your own phone/email/etc data and requesting it be removed (I do it all the time).

BTW: if you got this far, RE RE RE read post one.
How does one report? I have their email. Someone reached out to me totally trying to scam me doing this exact method.

I'm trying to buy some 3rd Row seats right now... and certainly feels off or something. The forum user sent me their Uncle's email address and said he wasn't sure they were still available... if I'd read all of this, I probably wouldn't have went any further and never emailed the "uncle". I emailed, they asked for my zip code to quote a shipped price, then gave me the price which sounds right in line with what I've watched some eBay and other transactions go for shipped. So felt comfortable enough, they were responsive as well after the first couple hour wait.

Sent me a telephone number to Apple Pay too... hesitated but he'd sent pics to me, they looked good. Tried to Apple Pay and Apple said the number wasn't setup. Said he thought that should have worked, but to try and use his wife's number... different area code (but hey, I have another state's area code and wife has entirely different one again, so sure)... that one was registered but Apple Pay says "Transaction Failed" with no further information. Just not feeling comfortable at this point with two failed Apple Pay transactions...

Did a reverse image search, and found Facebook posts with the same photos from back in May... name is different, but could be wife and last name is different, but so is my wifes... yeah, I'm really uncomfortable now. I can't figure out a way to feel comfortable enough to complete a transaction short of they're being close enough to meet and hand cash to after I see the seats. Oh well.

Dunno if all that sounds familiar to anyone, but thought I'd post just in case. If somehow this has happened to someone else or someone else reads this and sees a repeat scenario. The forum member here is established for several years, and did post an offer for these seats here in the classifieds a couple months ago and I did send them a PM that they answered after a couple days, that's why I felt relatively comfortable in the first place. Oh well. 11-12 hour drive to Missouri perhaps is next best option...

Aw, jeez. I'm an idiot (if it wasn't already obvious)... I didn't double check the history and the person I thought had sent the DM wasn't it at all... all I had to do was click on their user and I'd have blocked/reported them right away... I did find their name in my original email though, and sure enough Searching here... so very obvious a scammer joining on Monday and now deleted. Wow, I got sorta lucky... but now they know my email address. Doh!

I didn't lose out thanks to the scammer using some bad Apple Pay phone numbers!!!

Glad you caught it before sending $$

Another of the 1000's of reasons to KEEP discussions within the forum DM system....AND another reason to immediately REPORT any DM that seems even a tiny bit suspicious.

Unfortunately, the offending email does nearly nothing, since it won't be in the database.

Your recourse is to search the forum for YOUR email addy or YOUR phone number, and then either edit those posts to remove it, or report those posts so I can.

As warned many times, NEVER NEVER post your email or phone number in a forum post. Doing so is just asking to be scammed.

The report link exists below every single forum post and every single DM. Left side, first text link I think.

Appear to have just received a direct gmail from genmoto62@gmail.com .... claiming to be a member here. The email states it was a direct PM to me...but of course it was not. Google AI is claiming that gmail is associated with a scammer in detroit.

The things we learn about life, and other people, and ourselves, good or bad, from owning these rigs….

Luckily most people on this forum are battle hardened and won’t fall for this horse s***

Yeah, I need to go thru and delete my cell from old posts, I started getting texts that were scams after a recent post of being interested in some used suspension parts…

On the Porsche forums the scammers create an almost identical username and message interested buyers.

Like they will create a “Sajan.” And at first glance no one will notice.

They're absolutely still scraping the classifieds, and sending emails out claiming to be the user. Thanks for putting the banner up, even though this would've smelled fishy anyways.
