Chrome or Black?

were the slee lugs made by mcgard with the spinning seat? That is a primary complaint I have about even the mcgard security lug. No spinning seat, which is necessary to avoid galling the taper in the forged aluminum wheel.

To address the original question, I have the black mcgard kit and they look great, but the chrome coating isn’t as complete. Meaning in the corners of some of the splines there is very slight corrosion, and this is with no road salt in sight.

I thought I had a picture but can’t find it.. and the thing is currently totally coated in 2000+ mile including engineer-pass and other grime. I’ll snap a pic when I get it cleaned up.

The Slee lug nuts are not McGard and they do not have the spinning seat.

FWIW...chrome versions of both Toyota-branded McGards and McGards one label units (same)...tend to get a bit of that crud around the slot edges. A lot of pressure and cranking on them when repeatedly torquing down, and I think the result is that some surface breakdown is inevitable.

Neither finish is immune.

But I only notice when they are in my hand. Otherwise, the trail damage to my RW far “outshines” a wee bit of lugnut blemish. :hillbilly: :meh:

This seems like a great option! Cheaper than buying new lug nuts.

I could be wrong...but there’s a good chance those won’t do well on rock warrior lugs for two reasons—

-RW lugnuts are basically round...not 6-sided...
- RW lugnuts are deep-set within holes that have very little space around them—too tight for normal tire irons. Could be a problem trying to cram rubber boots over them deeply enough to stay... since the space is tight. :meh:

Thanks for the info. Anybody know if there's a set of proper lug nuts in black for RWs?

McGard 65515BK is the correct short, black, full kit including spline drive socket. But 4 of the 20 are security lugs
McGard 65315BK is an extra set of 4 to replace the security lugs

These are the proper lugs with the spinning cone seat to avoid damaging the wheel.

I ordered quantity five of McGard Black Cone Seat SplineDrive Lug Nut Set(4) - M14 x 1.5 # 65315BK and ordered the McGard Installation Tool 22mm Hex # 65302 separately. It saved me a few dollars and I avoided the locks I didn't want.

@KLF made a good point about getting a spare socket. Also the heat shrink tubing to avoid scratching the wheel. The well around each lug is quite tight and the edge of the socket pretty sharp.

One other thing: I don't like how the sockets could scratch the RW wheels, so I found some big heat shrink tubing at Homey Depot and put that around the outside of both sockets.

That’s a great idea!
