Lockers act squirrely if the tire pressure is off from tire to tire so make sure theya are within 1 PSI.

Will do--thanks.

I'm starting to think my idle issue is my brake booster.

It's not every time--but freqently, when I'm coming to a stop, it will die right as I hit the brakes.

Is there some way to isolate the booster & drive to confirm? Can I just plug the air line & try it that way?

I have really hijacked this thread......

Look at your carb, take it out make sure all the parts move and the butterflies are moving freely. I had the same problem with my 40 when I first got it, to make it home I had to keep my foot on the gas and brake at stops so it wouldn't die. I got a carb kit from Napa and broke it all down, one of my butterflies was shut and would not move so I assume that was the problem (since I rebuilt the carb I could not pinpoint the problem). Afterwords, the carb was like new, I only got the troll hole carb, because I wanted to get rid of the extra intake ports on the old carb. I know you have a new carb...but you never know, give it a look see.

Already had it out--I took it off to check the gaskets & make sure all the manifold bolts were tight--everything was good.

It runs great--I just can't get it to idle below @ 1200--which isn't really idling!

It used to purr along at 500-600 and never stall.

You can cap the booster line. Just pull it off the booster and stick a big bolt or something in it. That will just kill your power brakes. can also go buy a cheapo vacuum pump and put it on the booster to see if it holds vacuum. I forget how much those pumps are, but if they are too expensive you can borrow mine. I can bring it to a meeting.

I put the cap on the booster line and drove for a bit (really have to stand on the brakes like that!) and while it didn't die when I hit the brakes, I still couldn't get a good idle. I had to twist it up to about 1200 to keep from stalling and even then it surges.

Followed up with a compression test (I'd been stalling on that one--sometimes you don't want to know....) and it seems fine (1/130, 2/125, 3/125, 4/130, 5/135, 6/130). The all ran up right away also.

Any other suggestions? I'm about to take the "drive of shame" and take it to a shop.

That's really good compression for an engine that old. I'm out of ideas. I figure you might have an intake leak. Is it possible that the timing got off somehow? Hate to see you take it to a shop.

Just got back from driving about 50 miles around town and whatever was bugging the old girl seems to have taken care of itself--when I pulled into the drive I was able to twist the idle back down to about 600 and she just purred right along.

Bad gas? Chunk of s*** stuck in the idle jet? Bad mojo? Who knows?

We'll see what the moring drive to work is like.
