Chevy starter anyone?

Wild guess but I don't imagine anyone here somewhat nearby has a chevy smallblock starter kicking around?

I think mine is pooched. Jumping it from my 80 it will turn over a little bit, sometimes, and then just nothing..no clicking or anything.

I pulled off all the main grounds, grinded and cleaned up the frame and the leads, re-atatched them all, didn't seem to make a difference.

Pulled the starter, hooked up cables to it and nothing happens when I jump it.

i have 4 or 5 of them I'm sure i can get u one ,to bad u didn't know earlier i was over on bonson most of the day my buddy is SOA'ing is

did u open up the solenoid , bash it with hammer full of rust and cobwebs very easy to rip apart and clean
but i have one if you need it . don't no what condition they are in . but one of them will turn for sure

I did hit it with a hammer, probably not hard enough! And no, I didn't open it up. I'll do that though.

Still having issues though, not sure what's going on. I have jumper leads going straight from my 81 to the battery leads on the 40, get sort of an intermittent RrrRrrRrr and then again nothing. Change the leads directly to the starter and more or less the same thing.
I'll try it again tomorrow and have "the generator" revving a lot more, little late right now to be pissing off my neighbours.

Igniter II back from a warranty return again. I hate pertronix crap. I should of change the whole distributor

Maybe pull the plugs a rat may of filled your cylinders full of crap trying to build a nest or something. This happens to our farm vehicles out in sask. The Mouse fill the cylinders full of crap. We Have to pull plugs and spin the engine and try to blow all the crap out of the cylinders through the spark plug holes lol seriously

sounds like you need a bigger hammer otherwise its probably electrical.

Make sure the solenoid is getting full battery power. Sometimes the ignition system has a way of choking the
full output. I put a relay on my starter for my 12HT, huge difference.

Thanks for the offer Jake, but I don't get home till 6:30. I will pull the plugs, was thinking about that anyways. Give it as little resistance as possible.

that starter may have been crap also , i have so many of them i don't no which ones are crap ,
but it should work .that was why it was complete .i built a couple good ones out of my pile of them .
i bench tested it before i gave it to you ,mind you under no load and it spun fine ,
the starter i gave u should work .i clean them all up check and fix brushes if need be
completely open up the solenoid and clean and repair if needed . but ya never no it still could be a dud starter

depending on when I finish work I might be able to pop by today. grab a meter and check voltage at the starter (main lead, when trying to crank) This will tell you if the voltage is getting there. Check the grounds to the engine, might be bad connection there. check the ouput from the starter relay as well. Call me when you get home.

here's a down and dirty video showing how to test the chev starter showing how to testing the selonoid and then the motor ,to see which half is maybe defective ,if you might want to check your old one that looks brand new and fix it .check around the 2:30 to 3:40 for the individual tests but watch it all .

jeff if you have a toasted battery and it still hooked up it can draw all the power that's going to the starter. try to disconnect it and put the cables straight to the wires with no battery.

It was pulling a really high load when trying to crank. Mat and I pulled the plugs and spun it, no mice shot out, or anything else for that matter. Put the plugs back in and pretty much just breathed on the key and it flashed up instantly.
In hindsight I should have pulled the plugs and squirted a bit of oil down there...but it runs..and pretty good for sitting for a year.
