I'm troubleshooting a 95 FZJ. It appears a previous "mechanic" removed the CEL bulb rather than fix the car.

Is there a way to check codes without pulling the gauges to replace the bulb?

It's a 6/94 build date, true OBDI.

FWIW, I was very surprised to see the CEL not on already. I pulled the TPS connector and the light did not turn on, so I'm pretty sure it's missing.

These are fleet trucks and a lot of stupid s*** was done to them by an unqualified a******. This is not the first missing CEL I've found.

Know what terminal, offhand?
On an OBD1 FZJ80, you can put a meter on pin 2 (W) of the diagnostic connector on the firewall. It should go logic low to illuminate the CEL.
Depending on the response time of the meter you're using, it might just be easier to replace the bulb. Or use an analog meter or an oscilloscope.
