Hi,

Have a 1992 FJ80. At cold start-up all is well. After about 5 minutes running, I get red light on alternator and red light on "A/T oil temp". Panel voltmeter reads on middle mark, and a DVM gives about 11.95 volts across batt with engine running. Clearly, alternator is not charging. Is the A/T overtemp light normal in this condition or does it suggest something else? Before start, the batt has been charged using a good auto charger and reads 12.6 before start. The trans after 5 minutes is slightly warm; don't believe that it is overtemp at all. Charging lamp relay tests good. I did spraywash the engine about 2 weeks before this started. TIA for any comments.

You're seeing the normal lights for a charging issue; I guess Toyota just wanted to make sure folks really didn't miss it, or something... :meh:

Pull the alt. and get it tested; highly likely that's the problem.

I agree with Curtis that you have a charging problem.

Check the connections on the back of the alternator. You might have got some water in there when you sprayed the engine and now have a corrosion problem. Clean up the connections the best you can.

The brushes in the alternator are cheap and easy to replace once the alternator is removed.

On my DD, I suspected a bad alternator, removed it and had it tested at an AutoZone. Failed. Replaced the brushes and took it to another AZ for testing. It tested bad again but I was OK with that because it was worth a shot and having 2 different places test it made me feel better about buying a reman. Spendy little devil. :frown:

A '92 is a 3FE truck and the alternator is different. Sorry, but not so easy or inexpensive to replace the brushes on one of these. 1993 and up have the $12 brushes that are quick to replace.

I should know better than to try and answer FJ80 questions. Maybe we need to make a new section.

j/k 3fe guys... j/k :D

I am in the process of replacing right now. Call Cdan and get OME part replacment. My alt tested and failed at AZ. Turns out my alt is a after market and not OME and ordered the wrong amp alt. Dan was great and waiting for the new one.

Post up your finds, and I ll do the same in my thread"warning lights"
