Yes, mine made a buzzing sound, especially at startup and low RPM.

Reviving an old thread…

I’m having some serious issues trying to figure out what is going on with my charging system in the 1984 FJ60 2F. I’m getting 12V at the exciter wire when ignition is on. When vehicle is running and plugged into the alternator, I’m only getting about 2.6V to the exciter wire. I’m assuming this is the Charge Light Relay. At least that’s what I’m guessing as I’ve installed a new alternator(thought that was bad, so sent it back, they tested and said it was good). It’s now back in the FJ with a new battery.

Where on earthy is this Charge Light Relay located on this vehicle? I can not find it. A picture is worth a thousand words to me(Photographer, not mechanic)

As stated in an earlier post, charged lamp relay is under the passenger side plastic kick panel, by your feet. It will be easy to spot as it says charge lamp relay on it.

I’ve looked here… unless I’m completely blind. It’s not there. Any pictures would be helpful.

Correct, but it will say charge lamp relay on the relay itself.

There are two clips, one on each side. And pull the top off the assembly. Clean it with some good Deoxit or equivalent cleaner. Home Depot sells it.

This is great info for when I find it. Thank you. I’ve read multiple posts about it being in the passenger side kick plate, but there’s just a cooling fan and one other thing that isn’t this relay. Can you give me a better idea of where I can find this?

I’ll see if I can’t post a picture once it gets light out.

Here is my passenger side kick plate area. It’s cooling fan and seatbelt warning light. No other relays here.

OK, I found it. It’s in the driver side kick well. I was in there before, but I’m pretty sure I was looking for the ignition relay when I was in there. This is before I found this thread about the charge light. I’ll report back to find out if it works cleaning it.

Update: I used the cleaner, while I don’t think the relay was working perfectly, I have tested it to the FSM specs and it seems to be working just fine now after a cleaning. This didn’t solve my issue, like I hoped it would.

I have 12v power when key is in turned on to the alternator exciter wire. Alternator is a mean-green ( I have confirmed this alternator works), when the 12v power is plugged into the alternator and the vehicle is running the exciter wire is only putting out 2.9v. You need 12V to excite the alternator. What else could be an issue. I have a brand new fusible link system in the vehicle, I have confirmed that is working correctly. I saw another post on YouTube that said he fixed it with the ignition relay. Any help is appreciated. 1984 FJ60 2F.

What is a mean-green alternator? Is your alternator internally regulated?

It’s a high output alternator. Yes, it’s internally regulated.

Given its probably not the original alternator then, and it is probable that the vehicle was originally externally regulated its anybody's guess what wiring changes were made when the vehicle was converted.

I would just provide a freshly wired source of switched 12V+ to the alternator IG Terminal (a good source could be found with a test light in your original 8 pin regulator plug).. and ensure the S (Sense) wire has good low resistance connectivity to your Batt+ terminal. Given your vacuum pump is on the back of the alternator you'll get a BRAKE light if it stops turning.. you could go deeper and try and get your charge light working properly if you wanted.

I'm *almost* sure that the Charge Lamp Relay was under the passenger kick panel for 81-87, but I haven't dealt with too many pre- '85 FJ60s so it's possible it was where it supposed to be, but the parts catalog does show it on the passenger side for those years.

In the pic you posted, it would go on top of the Cooling fan timer relay, and use the same bolt, but I don't even see the connector, so who knows.

The Mean Green is a 200A alternator.

Can you post a pic of the location you found the Charge Lamp relay, for information's sake, please :D

Thanks for this info. The alternator that was in the vehicle when I bought it was not the original. however, it was running the traditional Green plug that is a 2 wire plug. The plug you show above is a 3 wire. Is my '84 supposed to have 3 wires?

I've ordered a new ignition switch as I've tested the Charge Lamp relay, it works, and I replaced the ignition relay. I'm assuming that because I get 12V to the plug when the key is in on position, then when it's in the run position, it drops to 2.4 or somewhere near there, then it's the ignition switch not actuating since I've ruled out the rest.

It was on the exact opposite side on the drivers side. I'll post a picture later when I'm back home.

I am not familiar with your two wire alternator. The pin out must be documented somewhere for your unit. Rewire and tidy up - eliminate the charge lamp relay and make it work as you see fit. Verify charging voltage and no current draw to the alternator with the vehicle off and you're done. Finding a source of switched ignition
