Has anybody installed a center console on an 80' + fj40. SOR told me that some modifications need to be done in order for a tuffy console to fit. I believe it is the heater hoses that are in the way???????????

should be no problem. I think the 80 still has the heater on the rear floor, 81+ is under the center console. Not sure if the hoses are a problem or not, prolly not much if any,
But in my 82 i put a Tuffy, I removed the heater(under console) made a little spacer for the rear and re-drilled the console to fit the stock holes in the tub. Worked great. I took the pad off the console as it was too tall and iratated me.
I've orderd a tuffy console for my '79 FJ40. I believe I also got a mounting bracket that allows the rear heater hoses to pass underneath the console. I haven't received the product yet so I can't say for sure how the whole set up works. I've heard though that some people have had to bend there stick shift because the console sits a bit too far far forward and rubs slightly when in 2nd or 4th.
The Tuffy Center console sits so high that it doesn't seem to provide the best alternative to the console need. I wonder if anyone has cut the bottom off the console and reattached it to make it less high. The picture above shows where one cruiser guy took the pad off to make it shorter but it still looks higher than comfortable.
At some point, it is just easier to fab your own center console....
The tuffy's are too tall, interfere with the seat belt buckle, they interfere with the stick shift, the heater has to be removed/relocated/booty fabbed...
I put a Tuffy in my 79. I made some stands for it to sit on to clear the rear heater hoses. My shifter wasn't a problem, but I already had the SM420 in there, so it's not the same as stock. Bending the shifter is easy though.
The Tuffy is one of the best things I've added to my Cruiser.
at least in mine I didn't need to bend the shifter, no problems with hitting the console, but if in 2nd or 4th I can't close the CD lid. Just place it right and there is no bending needed.
the 151's and CD CRANK, no amp, can hear tunes very well doing 70mph.
with the pad off its not too tall at all. I will say the Tiffy makes the cab feel smaller then it is, but its a real worth while adition, SO nice to have a place to rest your arm. the main reason I added the Tuffy was I didn't want to cut the dash for a CD
Lunap, and others, in your 80" did you install the console with a mounting bracket. SOR tells me the mounting bracket that they provide may need to be modified in order to accomodate the heater hoses. CCOT informed me that they are making a bracket to use for the console typically used in the fj60, to be used in 79-84 fj40's. I still don't know what is different about 779-80+ fj40's that makes the console not not compatable? What needs to be modified on the bracket in order for it to fit? Sorry for all the questions, I don't want to shell out 200+ dollars for something and have it not fit. Thanks.
a 60 Tuffy(8") needs no bracket, it bolts right up(drill 2 holes in bottom of console) a 8: wide tuffy as used in a 60 will NOT fit with the stock seats in a 40. my tuffy in my 40 is 6.5" side and its tight.
79+ fj40 has a hump in the tub, so its different then a 78 and before. I don't see how/why a bracket is really needed. the front of the console sits on the tub(the hump) and the rear just needs a spacer of some sort(like pipe or something) to bring the back up level with the front.
front, console mounts to treaded holes in tub, redill the console to match.
back, sits up about 1" off the tub(I have 2 mats in the rear so thats why it looks like its sitting right on floor)
from the front looking to the back, the white thing is the spacer(one on each side) I used, just a nylon bushing I had laying around, but pipe, 1x1" tube or whatever would work. (the pink thing is a lighter I haven't retrieved yet I again used captive nuts in the tub to mount it, re-drilled the Tuffy, got longer bolts.
I took the heater out, its was under the console, looped the hoses(even used a toyota hose) If you wanted you could use an earlier heater and mount it in the rear, I have to need. If the heater is already in the rear(80 and before) then I would think triming for the hoses would work(like Romer)
landpimp: aren't those 151s meant to be run on a home system using 8 ohms? how well do they work in your application? don't they sound a bit wierd in an enclosed vehicle?
they sound GREAT! not sure what the ohms are. I highly recomend them. I have MB quartz in the doors.

the older 151's that landpimp has are 6 ohms, compatable with your car stereo. The newer version, the 151S, is 8 ohms, I think. You can't get the old bose 151's from bose anymore, but they are always on ebay.
Have a center console in an 1982 FJ40. Moved the rear heater farther back to make it fit. I just drilled the holes into the bottom of the console and used neopreme washers to cushion the console. The rear of the console I used two hockey pucks as spacers and my heater hoses run between the two. It is a great console, you will only have to bend the stickshift (me) if you put the console ontop of the heater--but it looks silly, so move the heater.
I again used captive nuts in the tub to mount it, re-drilled the Tuffy, got longer bolts.
