old carter 4 bbl. , the newer ones , thermoquads , edelbrocks are all crap.

older quadrapuke like late 60's to mid 70's rebuilt are pretty good no major emission stuff etc. pretty good carb but harder to work on or adjust like a holley.

my self i am a holley guy, but i build my own. i like the 600 cfm with spring loaded needle and seat's and floats and set the floats a little low to keep from flooding and extend the bowl vent too and make sure you put in one of the one way valves to keep from blowing out the power valve. holley's are so basic and easy to work on. just my $. 02 good luck!!

Early to mid 70s QUADRAJET .......ALL THE WAY!!!!

If you’ve ever heard the expression that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then consider that Holley and Edelbrock both offer their own versions of this legendary carb. The spread-bore design gives you low end torque and fuel economy, combined with secondary passing and top end. It just basically does it all!

i have been googling rochester qjet and i don't see any different model numbers. are the qjets pretty universal? the only differences i see are for small blocks and big blocks. and what differences are there in years? is ebay the best place to get one? is it best to get one and rebuild it? or get one that says it has been rebuilt? thanks.

There are a TON of different models, manual vs thermal choke, with and without a/c idle compensator etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.

I've never looked for one on Ebay, so I couldn't honestly answer that question.

If you find one on Ebay or thru classifieds, ask the seller for the ID number on the carb. Many times you can figure out the year it was offered from the ID #. There's prolly a site somewhere on the web that has that info as well.

As far as rebuilding goes, they're fairly straightforward to clean. The trick is in the assembly. The accel pump linkage weaves into the pump arm, requiring you to tilt the airhorn onto the fuel bowl. With the metering rods dangling from the air horn, and the vent tubes requiring very careful insertion into the bowl, this is the most critical part of the assembly. Reconnecting the choke linkage, which drops into a pocket of the fuel bowl, is a nuisance, but a bit easier than dealing with the metering rods and vent tubes.

If the core doesn't cost you much, you have little to lose in trying it yourself. If you're just curious as to the complexity of the unit, you could try walking into a local pick and pull and disassembling one of theirs in the yard just for kicks!;p

on qjets is there a way to adjust them for offroading as far as floats and stuff? or is it just a matter of the square bore/spread bore thing? i'm looking at a rebuilt one that was for years 74-76 with an electric choke. do you think that will work? thanks.

I used to work at Auto Zone when I got my Q-jet so I picked out an early manual choke non emisions version. I will dig thriough my recipts tonight and see if I can find you a part #. It was about $100 with a lifetime warrenty and I have had zero problems with it. Just set the idle and go.

I'm interisted in these q-jet carbs. What do you need to adapt one to a 2f, and hows the performance difference.

I just installed a Holley Truck Avenger. We'll see how it does.
