major set back with the Landcruiser today. Apparently one of the ground wires came off the start...and fried the whole ignition system. Lots of smoke, smoldering melted wires and a freaked out me. Luckily I think its all confined to the starter...and ignition switch...and most likely the voltages meter (have to tear the dash apart to see that). Guess its time to do a bit more wiring...ugggg....

Original harness? Glad it's Ok, burnt wiring can be dealt with, burned rigs, not so much. That's my biggest fears, fire and theft. Unrecoverable. Rollovers and wrecks you can part out. Get a new harness, that rig deserves it. No crappy plastic coated parts store wire!

Luke...was partial old harness...I think I know what happened...ground came off the stater and fried the battery cable, starter wires...all the way up under the dash to the key switch. The lights were still working to the rear, interior for some reason even though no switches were on or key in it...definitely a major malfunction. Luckily a trucker right behind me immediately pulled over and we got it out fast. I won't know the full extent of the damage until I get the dash pulled apart and the harness out. Not a fun moment for sure...

You might consider a fuse or fusible link on those wires when you put it back together.

Kyle, I have a starter and most of a wiring harness off my 75 if you need any parts. Just let me know and I can let you have them

Doug you just made my day! I know there are some differences b/w the 70 and 75 model years in the harness, but it would give me a solid block to start from. I haven't had a chance to pull the old one out to see the damage yet, but know I'll have to replace everything from the starter to the key switch. As for the dash switches (lights, heater, etc) I may be ok on...but time will tell. Unfortunately the starter is a GM starter...so I'll have to pony up the bucks for a new one there. I have to run Tracy Lynn up to Denver on Thursday (10th) so I may be able to stop by and pick it up then...or just grab the harness from you down in the San Juans...

Well here is the damage done to the harness. Its not pretty and I was extremely lucky I didn't lose the whole cruiser.

Dang, glad you didn't lose more!!

OK...so the wiring is in, and everything put back together. I have lights. I tried to turn it over, and its cranking but not turning over. I'm wondering if the battery may have had too much drawn when the starter shorted. I replaced the battery cables since the old ones melted. So does anybody think it could be a low battery keeping it from turning over? If so, I might try and jump it tomorrow. So close to getting it going!

Thanks Bret. I figured it out and its running! I made a young persons mistake and forgot about having the choke. I didn't choke it and flooded the carb. I let it dry out. I just went out and it started right up. So far no new fires, so we're all good. Now to get the kinks worked out (hazard switch, turn signals, why the headlights only come on with the hazard switch, no brake lights (but the taillights work).

Depends on the weather. If it stays warmish I might. I do have a couple of safety concerns as well...no brake lights and turn signals at this point. I'm waiting to hear back from coolerman about the brake lights. The turn signals may be b/c I don't have the hazard switch installed and it won't complete the flasher circuit. We'll see...
