I recently pulled the engine and replace a bunch of gaskets and pulled the distributer in the process. Now it is all back in and I am a newbie to firing up an engine that has been out and one with the dizzy pulled also. she turns over and backfires, but wont fire up. I need some help with where to start, TDC?, then what is the dizzy to be at when i'm TDC? I want my 78 pig to live again and im pretty bummed out right now Chiltons manuals only tell you so much. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'd put my money on the dizzy being set 180 degrees off. You can be at TDC for # 1 cyl or TDC for # 6 cyl. TO confirm which one remove the valve cover and rotate to TDC with both intake and exhaust valves closed on the # 1 cyl. The rockers should be loose with both pushrods unloaded.

that was it i pulled the dizzy spun it to where it should be and put the engine at TDC then put it back together and she fired right up. now to set the timing and im on the road again. Thanks a lot!

heres a new development. my 2f fires up but does not idle at the normal speed. It runs like a raped ape then when I turn the dizzy clockwise it idles down like it should to get the timing in check and then sputters spews fire out of the carb and dies. I really am stumped by this development. Any more ideas?

 Ha! Take that! Pighead!

Good job, Grasshopper. Pighead was on an important Friends of the Rubicon workday weekend...glad you have my back for the easy ones.

Talked to the mechanics at work and they said it sounds like its getting too much air. So tonight I looked down the carb. The second barrel gets no fuel (thanks to the PO, and the butterfly was wide open). So I wired that valve shut and now it will idle roughly meaning some more timing adjustments but now I only have in lamens terms a one barrel carb. I'm missing some linkage on the firewall side of the carb thanks to the po and the de-emission job he did. So I'm at a loss as to get the right parts for the proper fix. Can anybody show me a detailed picture I can compare to my existing mess so I can order the right parts and actually get 2 barrels of fuel and air to put out the proper amount of power from my engine?

Needing help such as this brings to mind one guy right off the bat, Mark. Aka 65SWB40 or something like that here on this site. Here is a link to his home page. Marks Off Road Home Page

Now, if you want a new carb consider Trollhole Cruisers, Marshall is listed under Vendors on this site. Basically, you came to the right place for these annoying Landcruiser type issues.
