Can you change a 24v system to 12v ?

in2cruisers-Well i'm not sure which point i missed, i was only trying to point out some of the hidden difficulties. I'm in California USA and 1-1/2 miles down the road at a NAPA store they sell 24v bulbs. They are also at my local truck stop(as some semis are 24v along with there trailors for lighting), also heavy equipment(i.e., Caterpillar,etc.). Form all the previous discussions on this board regarding the 12v to 24v switch, most believe 24v is a better system. So i stayed with it. But i missed the "point or two" to begin with so what do i know!

diesel starters are diesel starters.

gas starters are puny little things you should not investigate.

a LN (ala 2L-T engine) 4 cylinder mini truck (US model) pick up has a 12v motor.

this motor, will bolt to the 2H gear housing of the starter assembly. You will still need the 2H starter to rob the correct gear assembly off of..

As said before, I'd look into a standard 12V alternator vs a combo factory 12V alt/vacuum pump (you can get these in Australia if need be).

I've seen HZ's use GM alternators. See if the 2F alternator will fit.

Hella etc make 12v vacuum pumps.

12V 2H EDIC will be found in Australia or maybe SOR--long shot at G&S

a/c 12V stator needs some investigation. The rotor, and hub can be used from the 24V system. LN parts may work.

It's not hard, just a little research....

OK........the 2f starter thing was a joke...But thanks everyone for the imput. Please keep it comming, I am learning alot. So far I have found a good rebuilt starter, good used alt and edic...all 12v all from OZ $300. Aus, = $227.35 US shipped to my door.

Diesel 42..........I just think rewiring the whole car would be a major PITA. Im more trying to fit the engine to the car, not the car to the engine

Sounds like you are not to keen to pass on where you bought it to any of your countrymen to help them out.

Can we clear up which motor you are installing. I am guessing it is a 12HT 24v, but others are referring to a 2H. I thought only 12HT were exported as 24V from Japan, but could be wrong.

If it is a 12HT, they don't have an EDIC, they use a different system for whatever the edic does - I dunno. :-)

There is no question 24V is better to start the motor with, but it would mean he would have to run his whole rest of vehicle through convertors or use the charge controllers discussed in depth in other threads. He's also have to instal a second battery to run the 24v and buy the charge controller, which would be offset by the costs of replacing the 24v equip with 12v to run the motor.

In Oz there are far more 12v 12HT's than 24V. 24V is a rarity in Landcruisers so you are well likely to find good 12v gear for the 12HT here.

The other issues you will come across are related to moving from a petrol to a diesel. Things like starter cable size come to mind, and ensuring the thing is wired up properl y. As per my previous post, the glow screen shouldn't be needed unless you run in temps close to freezing. YOu'll need a diesel tacho too - maybe a dash from a diesel would be somethin to add to the list.

all the best for the challenge.

Your on the right track now. The engine electrics is much more simple than the rest of the car.

Note:there are 2 types of 12 v alternators for 2H internal and externally regualted.
Im pretty sure the newer were internal but I dont know the changeover dates

Yes I know this thread got a little side tracked......

For the record...
The intended body is a 1985 FJ60 w/2F and the donor vehicle is 1986 HJ60 w/2H and 5spd

I do very much appreciate everyone's impute and knowledge

And as far as my source for parts....I had a guy email me saying he had a starter then later emailed me back saying he could get the rest of the parts..I was incorrect on price price was without shipping and a last minuite part....400.00 AUD = 301.712 USD seamail

I am still not sold but, leaning toward the HJ. Also have a BJ lined up. Really would like to go 6 cyl. The FJs are gutless enough, dont even want to think of what a 4 banger would be like..
Have not paid for it as of yet....plan to pick it up on Monday. Why do you ask?

Answer anyone?

Does anyone know what year they changed or know which one a 86 HJ60 would have?

Should be internal by then, but the Toyota people did strange things. My 84 BJ is internal. If have to buy an alternator for the project go internal.
