Can you change a 24v system to 12v ?

A guy from OZ suggested I convert my HJ 60 (Canadian)24v motor to 12v when installing into FJ 60 body. Can this really be done?

YES

The diesel engine only needs a electricity to start it and something to charge the battery.
You basically need a 12v starter and a 12 v alternator.
I think the glow system will work on 12v or 24 but check.I think you will have to change the glow plugs.
All this just plugs into your existing FJ60 12v.
In case you didnt know all 2H in Australia and South America are 12v.
There maybe a few other little things that need changing but that about it

In the long term a single voltage system has to be less troublesome.
Would the parts cost that much?

Something to consider are the little things,ie.,lighting(complete body will probably solve that), edic and misc. controls, wiper motor, instrument cluster, fuel sending unit(matched the the guage),altenator, starter, glow plugs, batteries, etc. There are dozens of little unexpected things that work together for a complete system. Just food for thought. I too like the idea but abandoned it when i took a hard look at all the items.Good luck

I think the electrical guts from a regular old toy pickup starter swap into a cruiser starter. or so I've heard. makes the starter a cheap fix.

alternator is more of a pain in the ass. be tempted to get rid of the silly vac pump on alternator system at the same time.

I think some of you are missing the point....or two
I am in the US....you cant just run down to the auto parts store and and pick up 24v bulbs and etc. Also I am putting this motor in a very clean FJ60 (12v) body. I went down to the Toyo dealer parts and they dont even have HJ stuff in the computer. When anything comes up diesel its BJ

I take it a FJ 12v starter wouldn't work?

I dont know if it would fit but generally diesel starters have an output 3-4 times higher than a petrol engine to cope with the high compression

The fj and hj starters are quite different and are not interchangeable. These parts from the 2H diesels are long lasting and with serviceing are very long lasting.I can post some clearer pics tomorrow morning as the starters, alternator and air compressor are packed in a box. I am sure Cruiserdan would be able to source most parts for you. There are many shops in Oz that will ship to the USA for the less comon parts. The 2H is fitted in forklift trucks in the USA and engine parts would be available there. see Toyota forklifts.

I've noticed on my 24v 12HT that the oil sender switch is marked 24V.

There are no glow plugs on a 12HT, but it has a glow screen with big fat cables going to the screen. the cabling might be the same size on 12/24v units. If you're in a warmish climate that doesn't get too close to freezing then you won't need the glow screen to work anyway.

Your air cond clutch will also be 24v.

I'd agree with the advice of others to source some of the little electrical things from a 12v 12HT in Oz here.

The Aussies have made me a believer, these parts DO exist on eBay Australia very cheap.

For the record though, while you can't go to AutoZone and get 24volt dash bulbs or headlight bulbs, you certainly can at ANY commercial truck store, stores that service and sell big trucks like GMC, Volvo, Hino, etc...
