Ok, so I've posted in the 60 section about my 62's temp and fuel gauge freaking out and going way up then immediately back down, they say replace the guages, one said get new modern gauges, and finally one said to clean the contacts on the back of the fuel gauge. Prolbem is, I havnt a clue how to get back there....could any TAC member help me out?
Thanks
-Carl

huh wierd, my wifes 62 did the same thing once. I was un aware it was a common problem, sorry ive never opened her dash, but if I remember correctly there are black screws in view from the drivers seat, just start pulling the ones that look like the right ones.

There, theres a crappy answer that should hold you over til someone experianced comes along :grinpimp:

Gauges

Carl, I would clean the contacts first. I know the two guages share some sort of resistor or eletrical piece. There are 4 screws to remove, electrical plugs to undo and the speedo cable to unhook.

Here are some pics of a 60 dash, but the concept should be the same. I would use electrical contact cleaner, then grease all the contacts with di-electric grease. I did that on my other 60 dash and it fixed a non working gauge, but I am not sure it will fix your problem.

Here are some pics of what it looks like(FJ60):

I am a member of the yahoo group for the 3fe and I found this... It came from Mark, who is the know all guy. As far as getting the gauge out, can't help you. Do you have a FSM? All the posting I saw said that the manual shows where all the screws are. It sounds like you also have to reach up and remove the speedo cable.

Robert,
Spike, and immediately dropped down to norm?!? Did you notice if the fuel gauge spiked with it? This is a common problem with corrosion on the common ground with the fuel and temp gauge.. Easily fixed by replacing the fuel gauge.

HTH,
Mark

or disconnect teh temp guage temporarily from sender on block see if that fixes it.. I was always amazed in my 62 when I suddenly received a bunch of fuel in the tank then it all went away. course then you won't have a temp guage.
