Willamette NF. Both shelters we made it to on the Edison Butte trail were empty. Kwohl (the pics above) was much nicer but the trail is pretty gnarly to get to it (and super fun). You need some trail experience to negotiate some of the technical trail parts, and patience getting through trees. The trails were rated for 80" max width but it was much narrower than that. So unless you were in side by sides pulling gear, hunters were unlikely to be up there. It has more of a snowmobile setup kind of feel to me.

That is some view. Definately my favourite thread this one. Pictures like this get me thinking about visiting the US. And who the hell builds and pays for those cabins?

You are welcome to come out any time to Oregon and have a place to use as a base camp.. just give me a month's warning. I might even have a truck for you to bop around Oregon in.

The shelters are winter sports related, mostly paid for by snowmobile clubs and US Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management grants. There are a few structures in the more out of the way areas all over. We have a lot of people that enjoy destroying these kinds of things, so you tend to want to keep them in harder to reach areas.

If you get serious about coming out, I can plot you some pretty awesome routes all around the West US to take you way out in the boonies. Most tourists hit national parks and they are cool (and free in the winter), but I think there are much better things to see that take a little effort to get to. That is pretty much why I have learned photography. The shot above is a great example. There are more in my Picasa galleries linked in my sig.

Not really camping but the purpose of the LC was to get me to places that I would not normally be able to. And by far she is doing that!!!

Hey Ken, that is a fine offer, thankyou. Expect me and the wife around 2031 when the kids have all have gone off to college! I see from your photos that you were in my neck of the woods last year : Baden Baden and Schwarzwald/Black Forest. Next time pop in for a few  unless we're down the other end in Tassie where we'll be for this winter ( here), summer (there). I see you you got Aus spec sliding rear windows on your Cruiser. Love all the photos.

Cheers Todd

Tassie or Baden Baden, I would pop over for beers either way. I have a cousin wanting to move back to Melbourne and you'd be a stone's throw. Tasmania is very much a target on the world list for me. I also try to get out to a fairly small software user's conference in Fulda every year or so, and work in a couple week's vacation during that trip. Very much enjoyed the Schwarzwald and loved the old baths in Baden Baden. Email me some contact info and I will stay in touch!

Certainly you can drag the kids out to our paradise sooner than that.

We have neat things for them, like

nice natural hot springs

Forests with massive trees, unspoiled natural coast line with few people, volcanic mountains, plentiful creeks, rivers, lakes and waterfalls (very similar feeling to the Schwarzwald).. all within 2 hours of each other, a lot of variety.
sorry for the West tourism speel. back to your regular program....

Love to 80-series rims on the 60. Got 'em on my 62, but wish I had your tires.

Not camping yet, but going next weekend. I went and got my camper out of storage today and cleaned it up. First time pulling with the Cruiser since putting the hitch on. No speed demon, but it did great! Pulled it about 20 miles on the highway at 60-65. Camper is an 86' just like the truck! Made yes, by Uhaul! 1300 lbs dry 100 lb. tongue. Only about 2000 of these fabulous campers were produced. I've had it since 2002. I used to pull the same camper with my 62, but the 440F didn't like it very well. The 4-speed is a much better pulling rig.

Our first camping trip with the 60 was a lot of fun. Met up with our old VW bus crew for our annual thanksgiving campout. Toyota towed great!

dude that trailer is awesome! I wish I had one like that for my trips, looks really clean too

Thanks guys! Yeah it's a fun camper for sure. Looks great hooked to the Cruiser!

I have been camping again..

Between careers, I took a couple weeks off over the holidays and drove around the West again. Met up with Kurt and Expedition Utah folks for the winter solstice at Sun Tunnels, then got myself into trouble, then out, then into warm weather and back home. :)

(apologies, I really like this shot and it is representative)
First night, 9F was warmest I could find. 5F in the morning.. SE Oregon

Overnight again in Nevada above Elko in a couple feet of snow. Warmer at 21F

Sun Tunnels, no sun :x

Technically this was camp, because it took me two days (hi saline water doesn't freeze evidently) and help from Wasatch Cruisers to get out.. even buried tire anchor didn't work. Good times. I did get a good workout and was very happy I had all the supplies I should have and only need to add a redesign on one piece of gear (my huge ground spike) and add another bit (lockers.. I keep saying this).

This was a lovely camp, Valley of the Gods. Sorry no truck.

but I will augment with the ferocious wildabeast

This was camp #1 (dusk) on the Salton Sea, but the wildabeast started munching fish skeletons (and promptly poisoned herself a little), so I moved

to camp #2 (dawn)

Nice additions!

I keep telling my wife I'm going to get an old vintage AirStream to pull behind my 62... she says we need a new house first :) Couldn't find a 60/62 pulling one when I googled, but this wagoneer looks pretty sweet. Airstream could use a suspension lift though :)
