Anybody interested in camping this weekend? Any other dads want to take the kids this weekend?

I mentioned to my wife that I want to start taking my 2 year old camping. She's talking, walking, and potty trained so its the perfect time to start going. Expecting a negotiation,

Her reply was, "can you go this weekend? I really need the house quiet to study."

Needless to say I'm going to go this weekend. Ive only lived here a few years so i'm still learning the area. I need some suggestions of where to go. I'm a fan of primitive car camping. Not really a fan of being on top of others camping in a state park. Im gonna try to limit my travels to about 3 hours.

Was thinking it would be fun to hook up with another cruiser and explore to somewhere random.

Davidson River Campground is NICE!

3 hours from durham and primative limits you.

The beach mught be the direction to head. Used to be some exploring along alligator river in croatan? SP i believe but mostly gated now

You may stretch it to hit wilson creek area. Its 3 hours to Morganton from you but another 40-50 min up to mortimer campground which is closed for season still but then you have FSR 192 old rockhouse gap road that has good camping dispersed along it.

Another option could be virginia. Dont know much here. Steve and i have been dicussing exploring hogback ridge Izzy posted but have not found the time and i cant say whats avail camping wise.

I found a couple primitive campgrounds in Uwharrie off of Dusty Level Road this weekend. Also off of Dusty Level is Yates Place, its primitive but also has a pit toilet. There was nobody there on Saturday.

I'm leaning towards Virginia or the beach. I'm thinking I'll wait for Uwarrie until the meet and greet next month and explore somewhere I haven't been. Nice thing about taking my daughter is I can wonder wherever. Lucky for me she likes to ride.

I'm still looking at all options so we'll see.

I've been wanting to see the train wreckage from the Fugative. That's always been in the back of my mind to see one day.

There is also a really cool campground up in Grayson Highlands called "The Scales" The app trail goes right through it, its an unimproved road up to it, nice open pasture area, also has a nice bathroom. Should be able to see the ponies too.

Day 1 (18).webp

Thats in Sylva I might be able to get you to it. It is owned by the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad they were one of my clients when I worked for Valspar it is behind their maintenace shop and is private property they will and do call the cops on people who are not allowed there.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm definitely not trying to do anything illegal. It's about a 5 hr trip. I'd be open to it if the everything lined up.

That's nice. I'll check it out too. Thanks.

@pkniland Grayson Highlands looks nice. It's hard to go wrong heading to the mountains.

Wild Ponies would be interesting to see.

It's pretty neat. I've only hiked the AT through there but I plan to go back and explore. Might be a little quiet this time of year but Damascus is a really cool little trail town if you end up headed that way

Looking at coordinates, 36.670041, -81.487247 on Google Maps, It looks like there is a Gravel trail. From the Satellite View it looks like there is tire tracks. Seems like it takes you off the beaten path into the valley around the mountains. Hard to tell the difficulty of the terrain from the arial view but i bet the view on the ground is pretty incredible.

I wonder who owns it or the rules. Could be a fun expo ride with some other rigs.

The scales is outside of Grayson in the Mount Rodgers National Recreation Area, which is in Jefferson National Forest. While I was hiking through there was a guy in a Taco parked inside the corral. I asked him about the road (FS613) and he said any stock 4x4 would be fine. I am hiking up in that area this weekend so I may go check it out

I just realized the picture you posted is the coordinates I was looking at. The road looks pretty tame.

There's lots of random roads to explore in the area. This looks like the area there is an "old timer" somewhere just waiting to tell me stories and talk my ear off. Leaning pretty hard toward Grayson Highlands.

Brian. Dont they remain gated unless reserved?

Still worth the easy walk up from FSR 475 to see the waterslide. Bit chilly this time of year id say.

Lots out there. Was trying to stay within your 3 hour request. Shoot even hitting linville gorge would be nice. Plenty of camping on old 105/kissinger mem hwy on west side of gorge. Plus a couple easy walks to overlooks on both sides. And could tag into FSR 192 mentioned above.

Well "life" happened, and plans got pushed to next weekend. AT&T took longer longer than planned to install fiber Friday and I ended up buying a car for Brit on Friday afternoon. Decided to wait till next weekend so I could not be rushed and have the whole weekend.
