Not sure when Toyota made the true switch to 73 style heater. I know the one I have in my 68 has the slot for the defrost knob in the center but the knob actually comes out left side. 9/72 I believe the column shift ended as an option. Shortly before that they came with a slot and knob could have been in the center or left side.
Here the one on my 68. Not original. Neighbor who painted it painted the heater as well and any other things.

Here what they were like 68 to ?. And a heater I didn't realized I had for a 73 which may be from my 73. I do not remember if came with the cruiser.

If you can't find the correct 73 this could be an option to move the knob until you can find one.

Interesting I thought the part number for the one with the slot should end in 3 for the 9/71-9/72 version. It's the same as one with the knob on the front. Here the knob on the front and it's label.
