Hopefully w/ the time constraints we have a good break free run !!
See ya's in the AM!!

Nope....
Not a break free day today.

Turns AAA doesn't always tow modified rigs. Jack and Ray came to the rescue. I'll post more later.

You're effing kidding me?!?!?

Guess maybe we should have busted out the welder one more time?!

So for those of you not involved with this saga.
Joe busted a lower control arm bracket in Bronco Canyon, we discovered it Thursday night. On Friday I thought I had fixed it well enough for the run but it appears my welding fung fu is weak. Just before the drop in to the water crossing Joe heard a crunch, my weld had failed. We did a trail repair and decided to let Joe's rig sit and loaded everybody into the 40's and made it down to the first water crossing and across. It was delightful, good friends and a beautiful setting. After lunch we all headed back out. Everything went well and we made it back to Joe's truck with no incident. Mark dropped off Joe's GF at his truck and headed off to his foot ball game. We all followed not long after.

Just before the rocky place by the pucker spot I dropped off a ledge and heared a loud crack, not a good sound. After that my steering was pretty wankey, since the truck was still drivable I decided to carry on. Not long after Joe stopped and jumped out of his truck to take, another, look at the trail repair. He had been doing this pretty often so I didn't think much of it until he motioned me over,. Keith's welding had held but the bracket had failed, again. We limped out to the staging area and assessed the situation.

There really wasn't much we could do with Joes truck without a replacement bracket. My truck could be fixed but we were less than a mile from pavement and a AAA tow, or were we?

Keith offered to help me fix my truck but I figured what the hell I pay for AAA why not let them give my truck a ride home and not worry about a trail fix the whole way. So we sent Keith on his way and made our calls to AAA. As a back up I made a call to Jack, just in case. He was on his way to dinner with family but offered to give us a call after to find out what happened with AAA.

We limped out the the over pass and waited for the tow trucks to arrive and deliver us to our humble abodes.

Driver one arrives with a flat bed. This is John Candy with a bad attitude, pretty much a prick. He informs us that AAA will not approve towing for a modified vehicle, and will not pay him if he tows us. This is pretty much bull s*** because we have used AAA to tow modified vehicles before, the only time they won't pay the towing company is if the towing company tells them they towed a modified vehicle, duh.
After a mild conversation we send driver one on his way.

Enter Driver Two, this guy is Cheech. He would be more than happy to tow my truck except that he has a regular flat tow rig and his wheel tie downs are not big enough to go around the 37" tires on my truck. He was with the same company as Driver one and I got the impression he shared my opinion of the guy.

So now we have two broken rigs sitting under the Eagle Lakes Road overpass, it's getting late the wimmens folk are tired and hungry.
I'm pissed, Joe's pissed. I started working on plan B. I made a call to Ray. To bad his trailer was on vacation in CA, but he offered to load his portable gas powered welder up and come on out to help fix my rig. Almost as soon as I get off the phone with Ray Jack calls back and offers to come on out and give Joe's truck a ride home.

Time passes.

Yet more time passes.

Angry glares from the wimmens.:o

Yet more time passes.

The sun sinks into the west.....

Ray shows up, right on his heels Jack shows up.

Jack and Joe load Joe's rig on his flat bed.

Ray produces an angle grinder and I cleaned up the broken welds as well as possible.

Dan, Ray and Ray's friend fight with the welder.

More fighting with the balky welder.

Eventually we break out the ready welder, which combined with two monster batteries from Rays diesel and some might mighty C-clamp power weld my steering box mount up enough for us to make it home.

I don't think I've ever seen a clamp like the three foot monster Ray produced, we were able to clamp the mount, then I hauled back on it drawing the mount into position while Ray welded it. I swear the truck drove as well as it ever has on the way home.

We all made it home safe and sound, even if it was a bit later than we had planned.

I can't thank Jack and Ray enough for their help, it would have been a real nightmare without their help. As it is I think Joe and I both used up a lot of man points yesterday. :o but still not as bad as it could have been.

Well sorry to hear of your woes...but extra points for a good story Dan!

My friend Erik had a similar saga with AAA on Fordyce last summer. I had a broken ring and pinion and was limping back to my trailer and Erik broke his steering box mount. He told me to go on and he would just call AAA to get back to Auburn.

Time passes.

More time passes.

They gave him the same story and eventually he had to get his wife to hook up his trailer behind his truck and come get him. Makes for a long day!

That's BULLSH!T on part of the tow guy!!
WTF was that about?!
What an endeavor.
I was amazed when I got your text so late. I'd have figured you would have been home hours beforehand.
What a drag!!

As I told Joe on the way home, Fordyce has been very, very good to us and very, very bad. You haven't had a bad day/Fordyce run until you are repairing multiple control arms, center pins, broken axles, a complete rear axle swap out on the trail, almost loosing an eye, changing a flat or two, winching a truck every 50 yards or so and not getting home from a Saturday start until 2am on Monday morning...

Glad I could help and you were lucky, because we were initially planning on heading down to Minden for the afternoon, which would have really made for a long day.

Just remember, those kinds of problems make for interesting and memorable trail runs.:flipoff2:

Jack

Sorry to hear about the carnage and the tow guys but thats what i love about this club members are always willing to help each other out in a jam

Dan :steer::bounce::bounce2::cheers:

It's funny how you remember the trips like we had this weekend long after the uneventful trips have faded from your memory.

We still talk about the time I got our Chevy truck stuck on Peavine on a Saturday afternoon. Joe wasn't walking then and we carried him out to Mogul. This was pre-cell phone era, we had to knock on someones door to borrowed their phone and call a taxi.

As pointed out... Things could have been a LOT worse!!
At least everyone got outta the trail and back to pavement.
Krokar is right!!
This club is a class act and definitely needs to be applauded for the help we all lend to each other!!
It's a rare and very special thing these days!!

there is a saying I like,

"None of us came into this world alone and we all live, learn and grow with the help of others".. author unknown..

This is a great group and so many times in my life people have helped me alot. So I have no problem helping, next time the one needing help may be me..

think of it this way steel is fixable, everybody made it home safe and sound its all good..

ohh on that clamp, its a wood clamp for bending oak, I found it in a truck I parted years ago, it is real handy..

I spent Sunday cleaning and painting the garage. Gotta start getting some Man points back in the bank. :D

I haven't posted cause I am blown away by this problem you had to go thru. I wish I could have been there to help.

Props to Ray and Jack for saving the day. You could have called me. Even tho I was at the game I could have left and picked up the trailer and hauled one of you home. Maybe in the future I will just bring it on in an out runs.:hhmm:

AAA just got an F rating:flipoff2::bang:. They have hauled our white cruiser home from the con and my brothers cruiser once from fordyce meadow lake side and once from deer valley, Hwy 4 side. If this is new policy we should know and I will drop those suckers like a hot rock. The only reason I carry it is for the cruiser and the 4 runner-I guess both are "modified" vehicles since they have bigger than stock tires.

Most of my family members won't come with me since they have experienced one break or another. The wimmens had a long day!:frown: I hope they keep coming, it was good to have them along. JoAnn is like a mother bear. I can see her getting impatient-then who wouldn't.

Well sorry you had to go thru all the hassle, wish I good have been there for you.! Good thinking on stockpiling the man pts. Plus your trip should score a few as well. Lets wheel some more when your back--The Con is wonderful in the fall.

Mark, you were plan C, I knew you were looking forward to the game, plus it would have been a long drive to Carson and back.;)

AAA is funny, we've never had a problem before and I'm sure the no towing modified vehicles isn't new. I think it was just a PITA driver who was flexing his muscle. He probably got beat up a lot in Jr High or something.

How about some pics bitches?!?? :flipoff:
