Buying Help re Used 2016-2018 LC’s and LX570’s

I’m near Orange and would be happy to check out the truck if you’d like. PM me.

That’s an especially kind offer, @Sac Cerevisiae . Thank you. My other caveat is I’m looking to trade in my 2018 Toyota Sequoia Platinum 4WD. I added TRD front and rear anti-sway bars to it. It’s nice, and cavernous (great for my son in the second row and silver Lab in the back), but I miss having a Land Cruiser (I had a 100 series that I put 208k miles on; two 80 series before that; a GX470 and then a GX460 for a while). Driving the Sequoia long term wouldn’t be a bad thing. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed it.

Anyway, there is a tax break for trading in that I can’t get for selling on my own. And I’ve received pretty solid trade in value so far from the dealers with all the listings above. Right now, a new $69.5k loaded 2018 Sequoia can be bought for $59.5-$60k with Toyota’s rebate and dealer mark-downs. So, I’m thinking it wise to trade while mine is still at very low miles and the offers are really good. Add in being in KY (70 miles from Nashville, TN), and the one at Orange may be too far for the deal I need to do.

On an updated note, I found a newly listed 2016 LEXUS LX570 in Indiana on a Lexus lot. It’s certified with 40k miles. Blue Mica exterior/ black interior. $66k asking price. So, I actually do like the LX570, yet would be perfectly thrilled to find the right deal on a 200 Series LC. Oh, and the more I read and hear about the rear screens (are they really limited to 480p???!), the less I want them. I’ve had two dealers say one or more of them cracked based on the seats hitting them, etc. They aren’t cheap to fix/replace.

Thanks again for everyone’s input!

@willgabriel, don't tell the dealer you want to trade anything in until you have agreed on a price on the vehicle you want. Once you have a written quote ask about a trade-in and the other items you mentioned. If you are going to finance it don't bring this up until you have agreed on the vehicle price either. It's really easy for the dealer "aggregate" vehicle price, financing terms, and trade-in amount to their significant benefit. I always start by saying I'm a cash buyer. YMMV.

I’ve had mixed results with that strategy. Sometimes, I do receive the best price for vehicle on the lot if I don’t say anything about having a trade until after a price is agreed upon. Other times, like with the Sequoia, I said up front that I had two transactions I’d need to see solid values on before I’d buy: 1. The vehicle on the lot, and 2. My trade-in. By being up front and firm (willing to walk away), I’ve seen numbers come around much quicker. Having other offers in hand to show then helps too, ie -“I’m not willing to pay more than ‘x’ for this vehicle and I have ‘y’ amount offered for my vehicle from other dealers that I won’t go lower than to do business here.” Of course, not being stuck on only one vehicle (even if it’s a used LC that dealer has) helps. Patience and being content to drive what I have has worked out well per getting a best overall deal.

Just bought a 1-owner 2017 black/black LC with 22K miles for 64K. Had to go cross country to find it. Had a local PPI done and they are shipping it to me this week.

Just another POI.

UPDATE: My preference is a 200 series, BUT I just received an offer from a Lexus dealer I’d contacted about a used LX570. They have a remaining 2018 GX460 Luxury trim on their lot with the F Sport package and a bench second row. Lexus IS offering $5k in Lexus Cash off remaining 2018’s and the MSRP of this one is $69,800. They have dealer-discounted it to $62k and will also reduce it $5k more per the Lexus Cash. So, that’s $57k + a reasonable $199 doc fee. And they are matching a better offer of $55k for my Sequoia. Though I prefer a 200, this offer is HARD to pass up. Thoughts?

It's a completely different truck. That seems like a fine price, but it's not a 200 series. For me, I think it would come down to how much GX460s depreciate (I have no idea), and whether that's actually a better car for you than the Sequoia. Neither is a 200, so will swapping from one to the other leave you better off?

GX is a SUV I considered. Definitely a nice truck, but I just couldn't get over the barn yard rear door. If you are ok with the rear door on the GX, then $57k seems like a good price.

That's 100% on you, but I would never pay that kind of money for a GX. I'm not trying to be a smartass, but have you driven both a new GX and a new (at least 16+) Land Cruiser or LX570? I have a feeling if you've driven both, you wouldn't be considering that deal. If you're interested in a GX460, save yourself a ton of cash and buy a 2011-2014 which you can get for $20-30k. There have been several good deals on used 16+ Land Cruisers that put you right in that same or close price range to a new GX, and that's where the smart money goes IMO.

Excellent point. I’ve owned two GX’s (470 and 460). I’ve only had 100 series Land Cruisers (and a few 80’s). So, I agree the 200 would be my preference over the GX460 especially because I like the extra space in the Sequoia. I was surprised they so quickly offered that deal on the GX460 (though i’d heard of such deals.

Keep the faith @willgabriel and keep your head in the hunt. Review your (Land Cruiser) First Principles.

As December moves along to the end of the year, I’m receiving e-mail / text replies per used LX570’s I’ve looked at. Three are standing out and I’m seeking some input:

1. 2016 LX570 (one owner, no accidents, NOT L/Certified). Starfire Pearl / Black with Luxury package and rear screens. 39k miles on a Toyota lot. $65k. It’s close enough (200 miles away) I can go get it with the busy schedule I have right now.

2. 2016 LX570 (one owner, no accidents, it IS L/Certified). Atomic Silver / Black with Luxury package, but NO rear screens. 30k miles on a Lexus lot. $66k, BUT I’d need to have it shipped ($610) as it’s 610 miles away.

3. 2015 LX570 (one owner, no accidents, it IS L/Certified). Black Onyx / Black with Luxury package and the older, smaller rear screens. 42k miles on a local Lexus lot. $53k. The closest of the three (80 miles away).

By market value, the 2016 Atomic Silver is the best value. Yet, when I add in shipping (to include getting them my Sequoia trade), it’s another $1000 (the $610 for one way plus a discount for the roundtrip). All three are offering the same for my trade-in (a pretty good price). For the 2015, I wouldn’t be paying anything. Just swapping keys and titles, etc. I do like the 2016 updates though...

Thoughts?

Drive your Sequoia 610 miles. That'll take 8 hours. Buy the Silver LX. Eat something. Drive home. Done. One day affair. You can do it. I have faith in you!
Yeah, I’ve thought that to be the most fiscally viable choice. My issue: I’m a pastor for a large church and our schedule and needs are so full right now. The long day to day and a half to do the 1200 miles isn’t readily available until after Christmas (especially because I also have the end of next week to go get my son in St Louis just for the weekend). That makes the $1000 for shipping not so bad. I do prefer the L/Certified Atomic Silver. I’m assuming the L/Certified warranty and four free follow-up services (not to mention 9k less miles on the odometer) make it the best deal.

Yup, gotcha. I'm the assistant treasurer (and in charge of the Christmas tree sales fundraiser) in our congregation, so I know how busy the clergy and staff are this time of year. I think - even with shipping - that's the best deal. My only worry would be - what if they try to lowball you on the Sequoia after it arrives there? That would put you in a pickle to be sure.

Have you driven both a 15 and a 16? If you have, I would think it would answer your question pretty fast. I think the 16 update to the LX was far more significant than the update on the LC, and I for one really like the 16+ LX after it gets an aftermarket front bumper and cuts down on the predator face a bit. I think the 15 is quite a bit overpriced, and I wouldn't be remotely interested in it for more than ~$43-45k.

The other options sound pretty close, but number 2 sounds sounds like the best option with the best color combo, lowest miles, it's certified and it's only minimally more expensive which is insignificant in the overall picture. I'd for 2 if I was you.

Yes, I’d would hope a digitally-signed agreement with the dealership plus the full coverage insurance of the transport company would ensure the deal terms would not change. My Sequoia (truly) has no blemishes. Anywhere and very low miles (3,400). So, if anything is amiss, it would be due to the transport. And I agree, the L/Certified 2016 is the better deal with 2016’s being better than 2015’s unless the 2015 was reduced to $45-47k.

How was the LX update “far more significant than the LC”?

I own a ‘17 LX and a ‘16 LC. LX has had AHC, cooled seats, power seats / power third row seats, power tailgate etc. since the 200 came out. It also had a front camera.

The LC added many features (all around cameras, cooled seats, etc, now a power tailgate), that were already on the LX since 2007.

The LX added the horrendous mouse / gigantic non touch screen that killed one of its subs in the sound system and relocated the cup holders to a completely illogical spot next to the AC and stereo controls as a result. Otherwise there aren’t many significant things in the update that the LC didn’t also get.

I guess what I’m saying is a 2016+ LC is a lot closer to a 2016 LX than a 2015 LC is to a 2015 LX.
