Hello all, I'm in a bit of a sticky situation. My 1hz is drinking oil like it's going out of style roughly 5L every couple thousand of kilometres, I'm thinking the engine is cooked and I'm currently looking down the barrel of either a rebuild or buying a new engine from Toyota, from what I've read already rebuilds have a tendency to go bad after a couple hundred thousand KMs, I was just wondering if anyone has had some experience with a fresh engine from Toyota? Obviously a new engine is more expensive than a rebuild but I would also assume it's less likely to have issues. Basically I'm just wanting to know what people have done and what their experience was and what they would change if they had to do it again.

Cheers

The 1HZ crowd mostly hangs in the 80 series sections—maybe cross-post there, too. I know I've seen a handful of "everything new from Toyota" rebuilds over there.

I would not hesitate to rebuild your existing 1HZ. Although real machine shops seem to disappearing the 1HZ is a simple engine and pretty economical to rebuild. Besides you are in AUS which has the best resources in the world for this.

I cannot speak highly enough of Engine Australia. Their support in helping select components was incredible. Ask for Rob. PM me if you want more details. And with the 1HZ you have the option of upgrading pistons and so on to make it safer for a mild turbo. Just make sure to add a good oil cooler.

And just for fun, just got this sent from the machine shop working on a 1HZ for a 79 series pickup.

And I'm not sure if any of your remember the movie Flashdance, but this is how my mind works.

Flashdance was a huge thing for my generation. AI description: Flashdance (1983) is a cultural touchstone that defined 1980s pop culture. It is credited with reviving the modern movie musical, bringing breaking (breakdancing) to the mainstream, and pioneering the rapid-cut, MTV-style filmmaking that dominated the decade.

And just to bring it home...
