Removed all the fender flares (and seals), removed the rear spoiler, and swapped in new AISIN Rear Door Lock modules.

Your on a roll down there! Looks like it may head to paint pretty soon?
Well, my paint guy has been really backed up. Gotta do all fluids and get my PDR guy over here. But then it’s ready and I’ll just be waiting. My Black 85 SR5 4Runner is next in line, but I’m hoping he’ll let me do both at once and give me a bit of a discount. 🙏🏻🤞

My first Toyota 4wd was an '87 4runner and was such a solid rig, even with the IFS. An '85 4Runner and an FZJ80 is an awesome solid front axle pair!

Thanks. I’ve had 5 1st gen 4Runners and now 2 FZJ80s. They are a blast!

More boring stuff. Knocked out a quick oil change. It needed it for sure. Of course, the filter was on as tight as humanly possible. It won a few battles, but I eventually won the war. Plenty of oil, but really dark.

Waiting on more parts to arrive from various Toyota places and the PDR guy to stop by.

Hopefully more exciting progress soon!

Speakers are mostly done. Adding in my Amazon order in case anyone wants to replicate it (only 1 of each is needed - I also bought a set of speakers for my black 1st gen while I was at it).

The Sub was disappointing though. Maybe a) the stock amp isn’t strong enough, b) the lack of a box is killing it, c) the OEM wiring is too tiny, or all three. But other than looking good and fitting nicely, it wasn’t worth the cost so far. I’m going to work on a box that fits behind the rear cargo panel and then might add a new amp if that doesn’t do the trick (the OEM amp cannot be very strong given how tiny it is).

My impressions:
- Sub just not enough bass to justify cost…yet
- 3rd row roof speakers are surprisingly loud and worth it IMO
- 2nd row door speakers have to be glued in and sound good (wish they had a bit more bass though)
- Front door speakers sound amazing but do need longer screws (I just used some I had laying around). Best bang for the buck IMO
- Dash speakers are a big upgrade too, but the passenger side had to be glued in as it hits stuff under the dash when using the OEM screws and tabs

Pretty easy installs, big upgrade in sound, budget friendly, and maintains the factory OEM look and feel. Mission accomplished.

Just gotta solve for a bit more bass in the rear without modifying the OEM cargo side panels.

You are one of the first that I've seen actually update the dash/ceiling speakers.

I put a powered sub that comes in it's own box in the rear, passenger quarter panel where the stock sub had been and it works pretty well. A good amount of bass that takes the load off of the smaller speakers but it's not as tight as it could be, etc. Anyway, a powered "under-seat" style sub is a good option in the rear quarter and/or under a front seat.

Got in the final Toyota parts from Amayama (Japan and UAE) and the local dealership during one of their parts sales. This is everything needed for Doors, Windows, and Fender Flares. Most of my rubber was worn from age and sun 😳, so I figured I’d just do it all at once so it’ll be good to go forever when garage kept from now on.

Also grabbed some OEM Sunroof Trim in Gray that I’ll paint to match the factory Ivory color.

There are some random fender flare clips and vacuum and charcoal canister lines somewhere in there too.

This is for sure the most Toyota parts I’ve ever ordered at once for a single vehicle 😂.

Final pieces of Leather arrived from Mosley Motors (it’s actually Katzkin leather) yesterday so we dropped everything off at our local trim shop this morning. More to come in a few weeks!

Windshield doesn’t look factory. I’d keep an eye out on any rust peeping through the surrounding frame.

Back when I had my glass swapped out, there was another clean SoCal 80 parked next to mine. The glass installer found a bunch of rust all around the frame and had to break the bad news to the owner who bought “rust free”.

Also check the rear hatch seal. Rust lurks in the shadows.

Good luck with your restoration!

Thanks, I’ve seen that on my 1st gen’s (not near that bad though) and don’t see any signs of a speck of rust anywhere out I’ll keep an eye out!

The speaker post is helpful. I was going to go through Crutchfield but if I can get the speakers through Amazon, much better. Did you go with all new speaker wire? I don’t want to blast the windows out with sound, just an improvement over what doesn’t even work in my truck right now.
