Well I didn't think I'd end up back in a 62 but here we are! I bought my first FJ62 in like 2010 for $1,000 and absolutely loved it but my needs changed and I sold it for what I thought was a huge profit of $3500 haha. Fast forward to today after owning many toyotas since then I sold my 2006 Tundra and my friend told me he'd sell me his 62 for $4500. I've known this truck forever as it was my friend Mike's truck then Andy's (who I bought it from).

It's got it's issues though....first the roof is rusting at the A-pillars. They've been doing this since Mike owned it and nobody has done anything about it but I intend to change that. I'm desperately searching for a clean rust free roof to chop off and put on here. Suprinsgly this thing doesn't have rust where 60's normally do so I guess i'm lucky there. If you have a parts truck or a roof you want to sell please let me know! Secondly, the transmission leaks like a sieve when you don't drive it. I'm suspecting this is the rear main seal, but I'm going to do the oil pan seal first and see if that helps. It also looks like one of the lines running into it is leaking so I may end up having to drop the trans and really dig into it. Next up is the interior, it's rough. The driver's seat is completely falling apart, including the frame, so I found a new set of grey seats, luckily, but I also want to do a new carpet kit. I'm going to try cleaning the carpet first and see how it turns out because I have other priorities I should focus on before the carpet. Also, my friend drove off-road exclusively with the window down, so the entire inside is covered in dirt and dust. There are some other things I'd like to address, like the speaker system, central locks, shifter feels loosey-goosey, etc, but that can wait.

Overall, it's a good truck that runs and drives well; it just needs some love, which it hasn't received in the last few years. I'll be on the hunt for some parts, so if you see something you think I need to address, please let me know! I look forward to documenting this build!

show us some close ups of the roof rust! it m no body expert but if it’s just local to the A pillar a cut and patch might be easier than the whole roof. either way the headliner has to come out which will be your first rabbit hole 🕳️ of interior upgrades 🤣

looks quite solid otherwise for the price from what i can see

again no expert in this area but i bet once you get it stripped down and windshield out you may be able to splice or patch the area instead of taking the whole roof off. do you have a donor vehicle
for the roof/A pillar? thats still a big job no matter how you slice it. good luck.

I don’t have a roof yet but am on the hunt! Either one is a huge job and the rust is working its way through the pillar I don’t think it would be an easy patch

Luckily I live next to @BrickRunner and he helped me diagnose some stuff today. I found a huge glob of silicon up on the transfer case/trans junction. I think I need to drop the trans cross brace to really see what’s going on there. I also replaced the grill brace so the hood works now! Did an oil change while I was at it and found some vacuum lines not connected if anyone knows where these go?

Well the trucks been down for the last couple of months due to the thermostat/water pump failing. I finally got around to replacing the following using all OEM toyota parts:
Water Pump
Thermostat
Belts
Just about every coolant hose I could get my hands on
Hose clamps to replace the worm gear clamps that were digging into the hoses
Water temp sensors
New battery from Full Throttle

After a hundred miles or so I think all the little leaks from hose clamps not being all the way tight are fixed (thanks again @BrickRunner !)

Next up I have ordered heavy duty battery cable kit with new terminals, knuckle rebuild kit, new u-bolts, new OEM toyota plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and O2 sensors. Once I get all that on I'm going to clean up the throttle body/TPS and hopefully that'll be a decent baseline for the truck and I can start trusting it a little more.

I was able to get the AC working again by just trying one of those re-charge cans from Autozone. Gonna monitor it over the next few weeks and see if there's a leak but hopefully not. I did however figure out that the motor mounts are completely shot and the fan hits the shroud so I just new OEM toyota mounts and nuts.

Another fun adventure today….filled it up for the first time and when I got home I noticed a few hours later it had gas pouring down the side of it…I’m guessing the charcoal canister is plugged up or something because it wasn’t overfilled at the pump and wasn’t leaking right when I got home…also if you rotate the gas cap too much it unlocks and doesn’t seal so that’s fun.
